Albany’s Lyle Thompson continued to make history Wednesday night as he was unanimously chosen the 2015 America East Men’s Lacrosse Player of the Year, becoming the conference’s first player to win the award three times as the league’s end of season awards and all-conference teams were announced at an awards reception. Thompson’s teammate, Connor Fields, earned Rookie of the Year honors while Vermont head coach Ryan Curtis earned Coach of the Year accolades. The winners, along with the all-conference teams, were determined in a vote by the league’s head coaches, who could not vote for their own players or themselves.
Thompson, a senior attacker, is the conference’s first three-time Player of the Year. The reigning co-Tewaaraton Award winner and a nominee again this year, Thompson became the NCAA’s all-time points leader earlier this season and leads the country averaging 6.1 points per game this season with 38 goals and 54 assists. Thompson is also a first-team all-conference selection for the third-straight year and was a two-time America East Player of the Week this season.
Curtis, who is in his ninth year as Vermont’s head coach, is the first Catamount mentor to earn Coach of the Year honors. Picked sixth in the preseason poll, the Catamounts finished third in the league, establishing program records with four conference wins and its No. 3 championship seed. In the tournament field for the first time since 2010, Vermont has won three-straight games entering the championship.
Fields, a freshman attacker, is the fifth Great Dane to earn Rookie of the Year honors. He ranks third among league leaders averaging 4.3 points per game, which is also good for 14th nationally and has 65 points on 49 goals and 15 assists this season to help lead Albany to its third-straight regular-season title and a No. 7 national ranking. Fields, also a first-team all-league selection, earned America East Rookie of the Week honors six times this season.
Thompson and Fields are joined at first-team attacker Stony Brook’s Mike Rooney, whose 98 points are the most in the country while his 6.1 points per game put him percentage points behind Thompson for second in the country.
The first-team midfield unit consists of Hartford’s Kevin O’Shea, who’s tied for seventh in the conference in points with 53, Stony Brook’s Challen Rogers, a repeat selection, and Vermont’s Ian MacKay, whose 54 points are sixth-best in the league.
Albany’s Mike Russell, Hartford’s Brian Monks and UMBC’s Zach Esser, a repeat choice, are the first-team defenders, while Albany’s Blaze Riorden is the first-team goalkeeper for the second-straight year as he leads the conference in goals-against average (9.92 GAA) and save percentage (.557).
The first-team specialists feature Albany’s Eric Cantor, a long stick midfielder, and a pair of Seawolves, Jeff Reh, a short stick midfielder. and faceoff specialist Jay Lindsay, who sports a .553 winning percentage on draws.
The second team attackers consist of Stony Brook’s Brody Eastwood and Albany’s Seth Oakes, who rank third and fourth nationally in goals per game along with Vermont’s Cam Milligan. Albany’s Tim Cox and John Maloney and Stony Brook’s Chris Hughes make up the second-team midfield unit while Albany’s Stone Sims, Binghamton’s Chris Bechle and Stony Brook’s Lucas Rock are the second-team defenders. Vermont’s Justin Rosenberg is the second-team goaltender while Dylan Curry is the second-team long stick midfielder, Albany’s Matt Bertrams is the second-team short stick middie and Binghamton’s Dan Mazurek is the second-team faceoff man.
Fields and Sims are also All-Rookie selections and accompanied byAlbany’s Kyle McClancy, Binghamton’s Sean Gilroy and Ben Kocis, Hartford’s Griffin Feiner, Dylan Protesto and Ryan Vanderford, UMass Lowell’s Cory Highfield and Sean Tyrrell and Vermont’s James Leary.
Maloney, Monks and Rock are also all-academic honorees after excelling on the field and sustaining at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA in the classroom. Joining the trio are Albany’s James Burdette, Binghamton’s Zach Scaduto, Hartford’s Kevin Sanna, UMBC’s Conor Finch, Stony Brook’s Alex Corpolongo and Andrew Dorsey and Vermont’s Bryan Capone. Those selections were chosen by a committee made up of America East sports information directors, academic advisors and faculty athletic representatives.
Thiry-nine of the 47 All-Conference, All-Rookie and All-Academic sections will be in action at the 2015 America East Men’s Lacrosse Championship, which will be held at Albany’s Bob Ford Field. Action begins on Thursday, April 30 with #2 Stony Brook playing #3 Vermont in the first semifinal at 4:30 p.m. and #1 Albany taking on #4 Hartford at 7:00 p.m. The championship game will be played on Saturday, May 2 at 10 a.m. and air live on ESPNU as well as WatchESPN apps..
