Saint Leo: Balanced Offense Leads Men’s Lacrosse by Chowan 25-5

via press release – photo via SL web site   SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo men’s lacrosse team was led by a balanced attack on Saturday afternoon as they took down first-year program Chowan University, 25-5 at University Turf Stadium. The Lions saw 15 different players score a goal, including first career goals by freshmen Philip Buque (2g, 3a), Daniel Sparks (2g, 1a), Devin Sparks (1g, 1a), Justin Hindman (1g), and Isaac Sinclair (1g). Saint Leo also saw their starting front line provide their share of goals. Junior Jake Gilmour led the charge with seven points as he put away three goals while tallying four assists. Fellow junior Kyle Pauwels added six points, four goals, and two assists. Charlie Kurtenbach added two goals also. The Lions’ attack would not have been possible without winning the face-offs. The Lions won 28 of 34 face-offs, led by junior Mitch Wilson. Wilson went 18 of 20 on his attempts and snagged a career-high 13 ground balls to help the Lions gain possession. Records: Saint Leo 2-0 | Chowan 0-1 How It Happened 1Q | Saint Leo opened the game off with Kyle Pauwels finding Matt Shand to open things up at the 14:07 mark. Freshman Devin Sparks set things ablaze when Zach Lysyk found him for the Lions second goal at the 10-minute mark. From there, the Lions would score a goal in every minute, racking up nine in the quarter. | Saint Leo 9-0 2Q | Freshman Philip Buque led things off with his first career goal off a pass from Matt Scharr. The Lions would continue their offensive onslaught, scoring 14 unanswered before Chowan would score the first goal in program history. Josh Nicholson won his face-off for the Hawks and was able to find his way to the net. Two Daniel Sparks goals sandwiched Chowan’s second goal of the game to bring the two squads into the half. | Saint Leo 16-2 3Q | Saint Leo opened the half with back-to-back goals by Kurtenbach and Pauwels in under just 15 seconds of action. Chowan would tally their third goal before the Lions tacked on three more. Chowan scored the final goal of the period. | Saint Leo 21-4 4Q | Freshman Justin Hindman recorded his first career goal to open up the fourth period, and it was followed by the Hawks’ final goal of the game. Saint Leo was able to tally three more goals before time expired, including seeing Isaac Sinclair tally his first career goal. | Saint Leo 25-5 Points to Note    
  • The combined 28 face-offs won by the Lions on Saturday is a new school record. Junior Mitch Wilson led with 18-20, while freshmen Austin DiPietro and Jack Spera wine 9-12 and 1-2, respectively.
  • Saint Leo’s 41 points are second most in program history for a single game.
  • The Lions’ 25 goals are also second in program history.
  • Junior Jake Gilmour sits alone in second place for career assists, passing Kyle Marceau (53). Gilmour has 55 career assists and needs four more the pass 58 by George Proechel.
