Spartans Set Scoring Records in Win over Nyack

Above – Emilie Barbosa scored four goals against Nyack – photo courtesy of TampaSpartans.com Tampa, Fla – The University of Tampa women’s lacrosse team had nine player score at least one goal as the Spartans netted a program record 20 goals to help them defeat Nyack 20-4 Tuesday night at the Naimoli Family Athletic and Intramural Complex. With the win the Spartans improves to 4-7, while the Warriors falls to 0-7 on the season. Tampa struck first as Maggie Griffo dodged towards the cage and put a shot past the goal to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead. Tampa scored back-to-back goals on their next two possessions to take a 3-0 lead with 28:40 remaining in the first half. After a Jackie Martin goal, Mallory Mays converted a free position attempt to give the Spartans a 5-0 lead. Emilie Barbosa scored an unassisted goal, before Morgan Cheripko and Mackenzie Perna netted free position shots to give Tampa an 8-0 lead with 11:30 left in the first half. Nyack got on the scoreboard as Hee Jae Ko scored an unassisted goal. The Spartans responded 15 seconds later as Perna found Barbosa cutting towards the cage for a goal. Tampa scored twice more before Lauren Lebo netted a goal for the Warriors to cut the deficit to 11-2. Martin scored an unassisted goal to give Tampa a 12-2 lead at halftime. Tampa scored five of the first six goals to start the second half to extend the lead to 17-3. Nyack’s Grace Orbine netted an unassisted goal to cut the lead to 17-4 with 14:05 left in the second half. Lyndee Boyce, Briana Yukniewicz, and Erin Cawley each netted an unassisted goal for the 20-4 final. Mays led the Spartans with five goals and an assist, while Barbosa netted four goals. Perna and Martin each scored a pair of goals. Cheripko, who currently ranks second in NCAA Division II with 7.7 draw controls per game, picked up 16 draw controls in this contest. She also netted a hat trick. Wylie Cassidy made four saves in the cage to improve her record to 4-7. The Spartans will return to action Friday, March 28, when they host Adams State.
