St. Edward’s Makes Their Case for Top Seed In District 19 With Road Win at Martin County

Written by Lee Roggenburg on . Posted in .
The Martin County Tigers were leading 1-0 with 5:45 to go in the first quarter on an Owen Anderson EMO goal back on February 28th.  That is when the skye opened up and the weather forced a delay that lasted until last night. The Tigers picked up right where they left off, quickly pilfering a man up ball from the pirates and Troy Fischer made them pay with just 3:00 minutes left in the First quarter to go up 2-0. The first quarter would end with Martin County firmly in command of the Game. Ritter Marchant got the Pirates on the board when he dodged down the right lane and found Ross Pridemore cutting to the backside of the crease and the game was 2-1 just 2 minutes into the second quarter. On the ensuing face off senior midfielder Clay Deal would find Terrell Sands cutting to the crease to tie it up 2-2.  Josh Hurwitz would find the back of the Tiger net again unassisted with a stunning face dodge and shot in the lower right corner to give the Pirates the lead at 3-2.   The combination of senior midfielder Clay Deal and senior LSM Terrell Sands dominated the Face Offs, going 10 for 13 on the evening. This advantage would help the Pirates stretch their lead to 2 goals when Austin Strazzulla found Mason Heim all alone in front of the crease. With 20 seconds to go in the first half, Coach Andy Scheffer called time out for St. Ed’s.  The Pirates kept their cool as they moved the ball to Ross Pridemore  at X.  Pridemore dodged until he found Austin Strazzulla cutting to the Crease to make it 5-2 with 0.00 on the Clock! Clay Deal would again scoop the face off to start the third quarter and race to the box where he found a wide open Ross Pridemore standing on the back side of the crease and a 6-2 lead with just 14 seconds gone in the 3rd quarter.  The Tigers were frustrated and flat not able to gain possession at face off. Then Goalie Eric Simon took the game into his own hands when he saved a Pirate Man up shot and immediately found Luke Kendall streaking past the Pirate Defenders and heaved a pass to within 5 yards of the crease and it was 6-3.  It seemed the momentum was turning with Simon providing the fireworks on a man down assist from his own crease! The Tigers, with a new vigor, came roaring back to life down just 3-6.  Sands on a breakaway would score 9 seconds later and everyone knew the Pirates were for real with a 7-3 advantage where the third quarter would end with the Pirates controlling a 4 goal bounty. Entering the fourth quarter the Tigers began taking risks and pressuring to try and gain control of the ball. They finally won a few face offs, and the Pirates would get a season high 9 players visiting the penalty box during the hotly contested game.  The Tigers were determined to get back into the game.   Martin County’s Scott Beck would bring score to 4-7, but then penalty flags flew and the Pirate’s Jacob Campbell was able to get one back to make it 8-4 pirates. Then, more flags and the Tigers found themselves at 8-5 and hoping for a miracle comeback. Senior attackman Jacob Campbell scooping and scoring another goal in front of goalie Eric Simon for a 9-5 Pirate Victory as time ran out on Martin County. St. Ed’s is currently the Top Dog in District 19, led by Terrell Sands and a stingy Pirate defense anchored by sophomore goalie Kevin Murphy.  Murphy played exceptionally well with 16 saves. St Edward’s can lock up the # 1 seed in the District 19 playoffs with a win on Friday over Pine School. The way this Season has gone, nothing can be guaranteed!
