Photo above courtesy of MITAthletics.com CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Junior Chris Cook (Tully, N.Y.) and freshman Harris Stolzenberg (Weston, Fla.) scored four goals each to power MIT to an 11-8 win over Drew University in men’s lacrosse action this afternoon. The Engineers tallied four goals in the first quarter and never trailed as they improved to 2-0 this season. The Rangers were led by two goals each from seniors Mike Marone (Morristown, N.J.) and Al Faiella (Bayport, N.Y.). Stolzenberg jump-started the MIT offense with a pair of goals just two minutes apart in the first quarter to give the Engineers a lead that they would never give up. Aaron Davis (Guilford, Conn.) notched his fifth goal of the season at the 3:49 mark of the first to draw Drew (1-2) within one, but Stolzenberg struck again two minutes later, completing the hat trick with an unassisted tally. Then, with less than a minute left in the quarter, Stolzenberg assisted on Cook’s first goal of the contest to put MIT up 4-1. After five scoreless minutes to start the second quarter, Stolzenberg picked up his fourth goal of the game off an assist from sophomore Luke Verdi(Middletown, Md.) to make it 5-1. Senior Mark Barus (Jacobstown, N.J.) brought Drew back within three on a man-up goal at the 6:31 mark, but the Rangers could not get any closer before the half as the two sides traded goals in the 12^thminute to make it 6-3 at the half. MIT, playing a man up at the start of the second half, quickly took advantage as Cook scored just eight seconds in of a nice feed from Stolzenberg. A minute and a half later the same combination worked again, putting the Engineers up 8-3. Leading 9-5 entering the final quarter, MIT scored twice to open a six-goal advantage. Cook and Stolzenberg connected for the fourth time in the game a minute in before Stolzenberg, who finished with five assists, fed sophomorePaul Orrson (Baltimore, Md.) for his fifth of the season with 6:45 left. Drew then staged a comeback attempt, notching three goals in a two-minute span. Marone picked up the first, followed by scores from freshman Nick Miller (Bridgewater, N.J.) and Faiella. Faiella’s goal came with 3:45 left, but the Rangers were held off by the MIT defense the rest of the way as the Engineers hung on for the victory. MIT outshot Drew by a 44-27 margin and also held a 35-24 edge in ground balls. Senior Kyle Mariboe (Highstown, N.J.) made 17 saves in goal for the Rangers, with sophomore Eric Bartell (San Diego, Calif.) making nine stops for the Engineers. MIT will be home again for its next game, with the Engineers hosting the University of New England on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Drew will play next on Saturday as well, as the Rangers continue their road trip with a game at Washington and Jefferson College at 1:00 p.m.
