FLN has asked new Head Coach Doug Shanahan of St. Brendan High School in Miami to share his thoughts on how he is building his new program through their inaugural season. Here is his eighth submission! We thank Doug for taking the time to do this and letting our readers experience this unique insight.
Author’s Note: Congratulations to Coach Shanahan and his St. Brendan team for their first program win last night!
It was a great day in the history of the St Brendan lacrosse programs history, recording its first ever win. The boys have put in a lot of time and effort to get to this point. I am very happy for them to experience what it feels like to be victorious on the field. We had a good crowd to see the game, the support was great and better yet every single player who dressed got to play in the win over Riviera. That is always a great program day to have every single player get a piece of a victory.
Often getting the first one is the toughest, learning how to be a winner has come with tough lessons. The biggest change we were able to make during the games yesterday was we didn’t hurt ourselves by continuing to make the same mistakes. Players are becoming more aware of their roles and how decisions during play affect the outcome of the game. This team is building the foundation for years to come, players will look back on this day as the beginning of something special. Next challenge is to get the next victory!
