thanks to Coach Cowan of Coral Reef and Coach Murray of Miami-Palmetto for sending this to us
The game between Miami Palmetto and Coral Reef was one of the best lacrosse games in the history of Dade County Lacrosse. It ended with Miami Palmetto edging the Coral Reef team 19-18 in double overtime for the district 32 championship. The game had 10 lead changes and multiple players from each team making huge plays. This game was an instant classic, a true hard fought battle. It was fast paced back and forth with each team going on multiple runs.
“So much respect for Coral Reef and their players, this was a true Playoff atmosphere and the play from both teams made it worth it for the large crowd” said Coach Robert Murray of Miami Palmetto. Coral Reef’s team is coached by Brian Cowan, whose younger brother Alex Cowan scored his 4th goal and game winner for Miami Palmetto.
The game was tied at 14 when Palmetto went on a 4 goal unanswered steak, to stretch the lead to 18-14 with just under 6 minutes remaining. That was when Coral Reef answered with a 4 goal unanswered steak of their own to tie the game at 18 with one minute to go in the game. In overtime both teams had many chances to win but huge saves were made by both goaltenders. Finally Alex Cowan scored an unassisted goal winning the district championship for the Palmetto team
Palmetto’s scoring was led by its starting midfielders who had 4 goals each including Cowan with the game winner. Juan Restrepo (jr) had another huge game after a 6 goal performance against Palmer in the Semifinal by putting in Another 3 goals and 3 assist to lead the Attack Friday vs Coral Reef.
Coral Reef was led in scoring by attackmen Gabriel Telleria (jr) 5 goals, Greg Mendoza (jr) 4 goals, Z. Gassenheimer (so) 2 goals, and defenseman Matt Boldt (jr) 4 goals. 1 goal each was scored by Justin Telleria (jr), Ben Seaman (sr), and Joey Aaronson (jr).
Author’s Note: In case you read this quickly and missed the reference . . . how often does a younger brother defeat his older sibling in a player-coach match-up like this? When Coach Cowan told me this the first thought in my mind was ‘come on, this isn’t Hollywood’. But sometimes art imitates life . . . and this would make a pretty good script. Good luck to Miami-Palmetto in the first round and continued best wishes to Coach Cowan as he builds his program at another school in Miami that is getting the lacrosse fever!
