Timber Creek Controls Hagerty

By Tom Hopkins Hagerty visited Timber Creek Friday evening for a game among very familiar foes. The rosters are young men who have played as teammates for both the Joker’s club program and then the newly formed Venom club. Even though they are not district foes, they were playing for bragging rights in East Orlando. The game was not as close as the score indicated, with Timber Creek controlling the pace and rhythm of the game most of the way. Timber Creek controlled the game as Sean Johnson went 9/10 on the faceoffs through the end of the third quarter. Some strong goalie play by senior Hunter Loper (9 saves) and a fast transition game by both Jake Sousa (2G, 2A) and newcomer Trey Grenga (1G, 1 A) allowed Timber Creek to keep Haggerty goalie Tanner Ward (12 saves) busy and the score board lit. The Haggerty defense had little answer for the attack of TCHS led by Senior Nate Gillan (3 G) and Junior’s EJ Wheeler (2 G) and Preston Hopkins (1G, 3 A). Timber Creek’s defense led by Senior’s Brandon Brinkmeier, Evan Walker, Tyler Gunning and physical junior defender Braden Cassata did an admirable job of keeping Haggerty’s Granite Porcher (Air Force ) to 1 goal and an assist. The D forced multiple turnovers and allowed Creek to control the action most of the way. Haggerty did surge with a flurry of late goals but was a little to late to change the outcome. Creek used the lead to get some valuable playing time for the rest of their young roster. TCHS goes to 1-0 on the young season with their 11-7 win and heads to Jacksonville to play in the Moe’s Classic against a very good Nease team on Saturday before returning home to play Oviedo at home Thursday evening with a 7:00 PM start.
