Top Ten Hold Steady in the Al Packer Ford Coaches Poll

All of our top ten teams held their ground this week and we had zero movement in our Al Packer Ford Coaches Poll. It’s surprising because our top five are so close, only a few points separate each team. As one voter pointed out, “Top 5 is pretty clear cut, though you could easily match any one of those two teams up and not have a clue of the outcome. All 5 can score a boat load of goals and play optimistic defense when needed. Shame only 4 of them will be seen first week in May. Shame St. Thomas-St. Andrews was not a regular season contest this year.”
He went on to say, “Below that it’s a wash as well. Lake Mary has a better SOS than most below them, so I’ll give them benefit of the doubt with all of their losses to top 5 teams. Still a dangerous team, just wonder if they can find that extra spark they need to get over the hump.” It would appear most coaches agree with him as Lake Mary continues to sit just outside the top ten. Several of our teams have big games in the next few days and could move up.
1- Our number one team, St. Thomas Aquinas, is still undefeated at 14-0. The Raiders defeated Boca Raton and Lake Forest (IL) by scores of 20-6 and 17-12 and have beaten American Heritage of Boca this week. A huge game tonight as they travel to our number two team, Jupiter, for each team to close out the regular season.
2- Jupiter won a 14-11 game at Benjamin and won on the road at Palm Beach Gardens 14-9. The Warriors are finishing with a tough week of games as they won a hard fought game over Vero Beach 10-6 and host St. Thomas tonight.
3 – After falling to Saint Andrews the Highlanders rebounded last week with wins over Timber Creek 17-12 and Lake Brantley 16-10. They defeated our number 6 team, Lake Mary, in a game they controlled start to finish. They host Ponte Vedra tonight on an evening of big match ups.
4 – St. Andrews shot up the poll last week after defeating Lake Highland and held their spot with wins over Gulf Coast and Pope John Paul II. They are off this week and should be well rested going into the playoffs.
5 – Ponte Vedra beat a tough Bishop Moore team 10-9 in an overtime game and then beat St. Augustine 19-2. and Fleming Island 16-2. The Sharks travel to Lake Highland Prep this week.
6- Lake Mary won their final district game of the season over Lyman HS 17-2 and then hosted Bolles in a 12-6 win. The lost a tough game to our number three team on Tuesday night and then host the Florida/Georgia Showdown in which they play Lambert.
7 – Douglas is on an 11 game winning streak which included a 13-2 win over West Boca during the voting week and a 20-4 win over Western this week. Their only loss of the season is at Jupiter 10-6. An average schedule may have hurt them in the poll somewhat but might have them rested and ready for a big playoff push.
8 – Vero played once during the voting week defeating South Fork 17-4. They lost to Jupiter 10-6 this week and will finish the regular season when they travel to Wellington.
9- Seminole played three games last week. A 16-3 win over Hagerty, a 20-5 win over Winter Springs followed by a 6-5 win over Columbine (CO) that included a game winning goal with 1:36 left on the clock. They have since defeated Lake Howell and finish the regular season at Timber Creek on Friday.
10 – Barron Collier’s only game during the voting week was a 19-0 game at Lely. They are busy in this final week as they have already defeated Plant and Cardinal Mooney and will play Georgia’s Milton and Lambert when they travel to Lake Mary for there Florida/Georgia Showdown this weekend.
