BRADENTON — Shannon Dean paced down the sideline as the clock began to wind down at IMG Academy. Lurking behind him was a group of five players carrying a full orange Gatorade jug, intent on dousing their head coach.
As the final horn wailed out, their attempt was thwarted, as Dean took a slight step forward and was only grazed by the ice bath. It didn’t matter though.
Vero Beach had just completed its “Decade of Dominance,” knocking off Ponte Vedra 11-8 to capture its 10th consecutive State Championship.
“It still hasn’t sunk in yet,” said Dean. “Ten is a very long time and I tell everyone that keeping it going is the hardest part. Every year, there’s a new crop of girls coming in, and to promote our philosophy at Vero Beach High School, we just have a dedicated group of players and parents and it keeps the train going.”
After the players jubilantly stormed the field, celebrating and shedding tears of joy amidst a barrage of group hugs, they passed out tiaras with the number “10” emblazoned on top to commemorate their achievement. The victory was also the team’s 145th consecutive win against in-state opponents.

Congratulations to Vero Beach, the players, the coaching staff and the community for once again showing a level of lacrosse that the rest of the state looks to emulate!
