Vero Beach Women Do It Again – 13-6 Over Ponte Vedra

My podcast colleague Wells Dusenbury has put up a terrific recap of Sunday’s state championship game. http://www.espnwestpalm.com/common/more.php?m=49&post_id=32121   I’d like to add a few thoughts of my own. The Vero Beach women’s program is so unique in it’s dominance in high school sports around the country and has few equals.  Continuing a history of winning championships and producing young ladies that go on to success at the next level.  Coach Shannon Dean and his staff have directed this program to a level that each succeeding group of kids and his competitor schools continue to strive towards. I was able to watch and write up Vero’s confident victory over Harriton (Pa.) earlier in the season, against a team ranked in the Top 10 in the nation at one point in the season.  Wells was even more fortunate to witness the great game against the nation’s #1 team McDonogh and his film recap is available on the site.  I’m not sure how the national rankings will finalize but if there are three teams out there that are better than this year’s Vero team I’d like to see it. And when the smoke settles let’s hope that the national pollsters give this team their true due and not the usual Florida discount that tends to pop up this time of year . . On Sunday I saw a far different final than I witnessed last year in West Orange.  Last year the final over Bartram Trail was 17-3 and it was never a game. This year Ponte Vedra did something I haven’t seen for awhile from a Florida school; they played a competitive game against Vero and did not look like they were just happy to be there. They took an early lead and when the half was over trailed only 6-3.  Although Vero basically maintained that lead through the second half the PV team never looked overmatched. Which is very important for the girls game in this state. Ponte Vedra showed something Sunday that should give a boost to all the other schools out there. And maybe a couple of years from now we can all say for the girls game what we said lately for the boys; the game in Florida will never be the same again. But not yet. Congratulations to Coach Dean, his staff and his kids for their championship!  Well earned, well played, well defended.
