For the second game in a row, Vero Beach’s opponent came into the game undefeated. First, Pine Crest came to Vero with a a 7-0 record and left with a 16-6 loss. Tonight, at Benjamin, the undefeated Buccaneers hosted the Indians. The Indians handed the hosts a 17-5 loss. In the 5 games since the Bishop Moore shocker, Vero Beach has out scored its opponents 78-24. Tonight, Benjamin jumped out to a 2-0 lead with Kiley Kempe scoring. She put two in the back of the cage that no goalie would save. Vero answered with a flurry and led 12-5 at half. Gabby Sposato finished with 5 goals including a spectacular left-handed diving rocket that is credited as the game winner.
Vero controlled the contest with Megan Gorman dominating at the center circle with 8 draw controls and Maddie Ellis picking up 5 ground balls and 6 draw controls. Gorman and Ellis also had 3 goals apiece. Sophomore Gracie Martin continued her productivity by having 3 goals of her own but more impressively to this writer, assisting on 4 others, often by threading the needle in traffic with a calmness of a seasoned senior. Goalie Lexie Patton preserved the win for Vero by shutting out the hosts in the second half. Benjamin hosts Oxbridge Wednesday night and Vero hosts Olympia Monday night in a battle of top tens.
