Wesleyan Assistant, Rick McCarthy, New Vero Beach Head Coach

Above – Kevin Heckman works through traffic against St. Andrews last season.  Photo by JPRImages Rick McCarthy, a 1968 graduate of Yale, has been coaching since he took an assistant coaching position at his alma mater in 1969.  McCarthy was the head coach of the storied Avon Old Farms program in the early ’90s and has been the head coach at Eastern Connecticut State University, Western Connecticut State University, and, most notably, Babson College where he took the team from a 33 game losing streak to the NCAA tournament in four years winning the Pilgrim League Championship in 1979.  He won the Pilgrim League Championship three more times with ECSU in ’97, ’98, and ’99. McCarthy replaces John Moriarity who led the Indians for six seasons after taking over for Rory Whipple, now at Tampa, in 2009.  Vero Beach was 76-35 under Moriarity.
