JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Defending Big South Conference champion Winthrop defeated Jacksonville, 13-6, on Friday at D.B. Milne Field. The Eagles earn their first win in three tries against the Dolphins.
“Winthrop played a great game,” Jacksonville coach Mindy McCord said. “They had some great senior leadership and are coached very well. We had some good looks today but need to play more consistently. We have to get stops and score goals. All the credit goes to Winthrop.”
Winthrop (1-0) scored the first four goals of the game, including the first two by Shannon Gallagher. The first of five Allie Yeager scores made the score 4-0 with 20:15 left in the first half.
Kelsey Wiglesworth got Jacksonville (0-3) on the scoreboard with 7:58 on the clock on a free position shot. The Dolphins scored half of their goals Friday on free position shots, including a Danielle Della
Rocca score with two seconds to go before halftime that cut her team’s deficit to four, 6-2, at intermission.
Taylor McCord found the back of the cage twice in the first 3:06 of the second half to pull the Green and White within two, but the Eagles scored three-straight goals, including back-to-back scores by Yeager, to open up the match.
Gallagher and Kristin Shriver each totaled two goals. Gallagher also poured in two assists, while Shriver had one. Katie Clark pumped in two assists.
Goalkeeper Alaina Girani (1-0) made 10 saves in the win.
McCord finished with two goals and one assist. Della Rocca, Wiglesworth, Ashtyn Hiron and Sally Holbert scored one goal apiece.
The Dolphins’ Erika Brager, Kristin Ridenour and Kerri Clayton picked up three ground balls apiece. Brager, Hiron and Emily Barton each caused three turnovers.
Netminder Kaylyn Kearns (0-3) recorded six saves in defeat.
Each team had 25 shots. Jacksonville picked up 24 ground balls compared to only 14 by Winthrop.
The Dolphins were 12-of-15 on clear attempts, while the Eagles were just 14-of-22.
Jacksonville hosts Coastal Carolina on Sunday, Feb. 28 at noon ET.
