#22 Saint Leo Women Surprise #19 Mount Olive in Nationally Ranked Upset

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo Lions, ranked 22 nationally, upset the Mount Olive Trojans, ranked 19, 12-8 Friday night inside University Turf Stadium. Delaney Gilchrist lit up the scoreboard for the Lions, scoring five goals off seven shots. The national upset raised the Green and Gold’s record to 2-4 while the Trojans’ season mark moved to 2-2.
 
Gilchrist, a freshman midfielder, led the charge with her big five goals, six of the seven placed on target. She converted her free position shot, and picked up a ground ball.
 
Saint Leo found continuous success in controlling the ball and working it around to their play makers. Eliz FinoMelissa Reeves and Gilchrist combined for 11 total points of the 12 goals. Fino tallied three points off a goal and two assists while Reeves netted a pair.
 
Maria Palomba was looking out for her teammates all night as she swooped up nine draw controls. She also earned four assists, caused a turnover, and picked up a pair of ground balls.
 
In a close battle between both teams, Saint Leo doubled the Trojans with shots on goal with 21. Saint Leo also had 24 ground balls as a team and look to continue this success in the next game on their home turf.
 
Makayla Goetz picked up the win in the net during her first collegiate start. The freshman goalkeeper earned three saves in 60 minutes of work.
 
Saint Leo returns in action on Tuesday, March 8 at 7:00 p.m. to host Lee University.
