Johnstone Scores 100th Career Goal as No. 2 Tars Down Saints, 14-10

ST. AUGUSTINE, Florida (March 2, 2024) – The No. 2 Rollins men’s lacrosse team overcame a 6-5 halftime deficit to defeat Flagler on the road Saturday night, 14-10. The Tars are now 6-0 on the year, while the Saints drop to 3-3.

Jack Johnstone scored three goals, giving him 101 for his career, making him the first player in program history to reach the 100-goal milestone. Mikey Berkman had a game-high six points with three goals and three assists to go along with three ground balls, while Grant Hansen tallied a goal and two assists. Lake Baker was 18-for-28 in faceoffs with a game- and career-high 10 ground balls, and Shahe Katchadurian (6-0) got the win in goal, stopping 10 of the 20 shots he faced.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Quarter

  • Johnstone scored the opener on an extra-man opportunity in the first three minutes, with Berkman backing that up with the next two goals to make it 3-0 just over five minutes into the game.
  • Flagler then scored the final three goals of the quarter, tying things up at 3-3.

Second Quarter

  • After the Saints scored twice to go up 5-3, Hansen and Sam Mattson responded with goals to tie the game at 5-5.
  • Flagler netted a late goal to hold a 6-5 edge at the half.

Third Quarter

  • Justin White scored the first goal in the second half to tie the game at six, but FC answered to go back ahead, 7-6.
  • Johnstone’s 100th career goal tied the game, and William Metz put one home less than a minute later to make it an 8-7 game.
  • After the Saints tied it, Berkman untied it with 3:32 on the clock and Will Brandt and Max Armitage scored in the final two minutes of the quarter to put Rollins back in front, 11-8.

Fourth Quarter

  • Flagler got the first two goals of the fourth to cut the lead to 11-10, but the Tars answered the bell defensively, shutting out the Saints over the final seven minutes.
  • Mattson, Johnstone, and Logan Myers each tallied markers to put the game away, giving Rollins a 14-10 victory.

UP NEXT:
The Tars will be back on the road next Saturday as they travel to Garden City, New York to take on No. 5 Adelphi at 1 p.m.

Saints upset bid of No. 2 Tars falls short late

ST AUGUSTINE – Luke Burton scored a season-high four goals but Flagler College’s upset bid against No. 2 (USILA Division II Top 20) Rollins College came up a little short at the end, 14-10, in a non-conference men’s lacrosse game at the Flagler Lacrosse Field Saturday night.

Rollins remains undefeated at 5-0 and Flagler is now 3-3. Flagler visits Saint Leo University on Saturday (March 9) at 3 p.m.

Garrett Moore goal with 7:03 left in the fourth quarter got the Saints to within one (11-10). But the Tars got a pair of goals one minute apart to sprint back out to a 13-10 lead. Sam Mattson scored with 5:50 left and Jack Johnstone added his goal with 4:47 remaining.

Trace McDonald added a goal and an assist for Flagler. Tyler Douglass added two more goals. Matt Mitrega and Brendan Watson each collected five ground balls. Nate Lehr finished with 12 saves.

Mikey Berkman and Johnstone each scored three goals for the Tars. Berkman also had three assists. Lake Baker had a game-high 10 ground balls. Shahe Katchadurian recorded 10 saves.
