The Sharks pummelled Fletcher 22-3 Thursday night in a first-round play-in game to set up a second-round match at Lake Mary on Tuesday. The Rams defeated St. Augustine 15-7. “We played (Lake Mary) my sophomore year and lost (14-6) in the same round,” said senior midfielder Clay Welch, who led the Sharks with five goals Thursday. “That match set the tone for us,” Welch said. “We came back really hungry. We worked our butts off.” The Sharks got past Lake Highland Prep in the state semifinals for the first time last season to advance to the championship game. This year they’re looking to get over that last hurdle. “We have a goal,” coach Tom West said. “This team has high expectations. They worked really hard two years ago.” The Sharks (19-1) scored their first goal two-and-a-half minutes into the game and then added two more goals within the next minute. Fletcher (10-7) prevented the shutout with a goal in the final minute of the quarter to make it 5-1. “They’re our neighbors to the north,” West said of the Senators. “We have a lot of respect for them. Those guys played real hard in the first quarter. Not many teams have scored in the first quarter on us, so we knew they were ready to play.” But Ponte Vedra scored eight goals in the second quarter to take a 13-2 halftime lead, and the rout was on.   Read the rest HERE
