Despite Strong Second Half, Hatters Fall to Royals

DeLand, Fla. – Stetson (8-7, 1-4) took on Queens (9-5, 4-1) Thursday afternoon and would fall short 12-16.

Queens would start the first quarter off by netting to goals before Kaitlin Pani would net the first for the Hatters at the 10:33 mark. The Royals would score three more before Kaitlin Pani would score her second off a free position shot. Queens would net four more making it 9-2 before Sam King would score at the 2:00 mark to make the score 9-3 in favor of the Royals after the first.

In the second quarter Stetson would be held to just one goal. The lone goal for the Hatters was scored by Jordyn Humphrey at the 6:11 mark. The Royals would net four in the quarter. Groundballs were tied at 5 apiece and so were the draw controls at 3 per side in the second quarter. The score going into halftime would be 13-4 with Queens in the lead.

Stetson would play a great third quarter holding the Royals to just two goals. Sydney Heimann would make seven saves in the quarter. Stetson would also take all of the draw controls in the quarter winning five of them.  The Hatters would score two goals, both being scored by Pani with Samantha Paglino assisting on the goal scored at the 7:21 mark, while Pani’s other goal was netted at the 3:47 mark. The score heading into the final quarter 15-6 in favor of the Royals.

The Hatters seized the momentum early in the fourth quarter scoring six straight unanswered goals. Samantha Paglino would score from a free position shot at the 14:14 mark. Sam King would score next followed up by Paglino. Pani would net the next goal for the Hatters at the 10:47 mark. Paglino would get her third of the quarter off a free position shot and Pani would record her sixth goal making the score 15-12 Queens still leading. Pani’s goal would be the last for Hatters as the Royals would net one more making the final score 15-12 Queens.

Next up for Stetson is a date with Coastal Carolina on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. at the Athletic Training Center. Five seniors will be honored prior to the game, seniors include Jessica DugganCaroline McLaughlinMolly KearneyAine Williams and Camden Frissora.
