A much-anticipated showdown between Naples and Barron Collier in high school girls lacrosse turned out to be more of a breeze for one team than a showdown on Thursday night.

And the Golden Eagles had an easy time ending the Cougars’ impressive winning streak in district play.

Sophia Chickering and Sophie Sullinger each scored a hat trick for the Golden Eagles as Naples beat the Cougars 10-4 for the District 20 title at Naples High’s Staver Field.

It was the first time since 2006 that Barron Collier lost in the district tournament.

“The goal for us was to get a lot of shots in the first half, and we did that,” Naples coach Jayson Saunders said. “In the second half, we had to have a high lacrosse IQ, and we did that. I can’t tell you how thrilled all of us are right now.”

The Eagles’ many scorers helped offset a fine individual performance by Barron Collier’s Madison Ryan. Ryan scored a hat trick for the Cougars, which of course was 75 percent of her team’s scoring.
