ATS – St. Augustine Record: Ponte Vedra Nullifies Nease Attack, Wins Eighth Straight Boys Lacrosse District Title

via the St. Augustine Record online – article by Will Brown   Excerpt:

Ponte Vedra (14-5) won its eighth straight district championship on Thursday night with a dominating defensive performance.

Nease scored the first goal of Thursday night’s District 6 tournament final. Phil Mylet’s goal with 7:44 remaining in the first quarter was no fluke. That context made everything that transpired after it a stunning coronation for the Ponte Vedra boys lacrosse program inside the Shark Tank. The Sharks defense asphyxiated the Panthers attack en route to a 15-2 win that left the visitors shaking their heads and slouching their shoulders in the third quarter. Ponte Vedra (14-5) held Nease (10-7) scoreless for the final 29:58 of the match. Senior defender Marc Leone said the Sharks did not do anything outside of the ordinary. “We played calm. Coach (Chris Polanski) emphasizes that,” Leone said of Ponte Vedra’s defensive coordinator. “Coach Po says everything will work out if we be ourselves and communicate.” Leone, Andrew Bray and Taylor Funke were part of a defense that clogged passing lanes, forced Nease to make the extra pass to an acute angle and were among those willing to lay a shoulder into anyone in black who dared scoop up a ground ball. Notre Dame commitment Maximus Schalit as well as defensive midfielder Matayo Trumble were part of a unit that buzzed around with the intensity of an aggravated sand gnat.   Read the rest HERE
