Calvary Christian Cruises By Depleted Windermere Prep Squad 16-3 Behind Thomforde’s 9-Goal Outburst

A couple of years ago I covered a game between CC and Cardinal Gibbons and CC Head Coach Adam Bond told me to watch for his 8th grade attackman Jason Thomforde and there certainly was something there in what was then the diminutive in size player.  Well, the kid’s grown up some the last two years and showed a lot more yesterday, with 9 goals, all in the first half, to drive CC to an 11-0 lead before they eased their way to a 16-3 win. As so many schools find out (at least those not realistically ready to compete for the state championship), that spring break is not treated the same way down here as it is in the northern hotbeds, as many families use this time to go away, making some team’s rosters kind of hit or miss this time of year.  Certainly that hit Windermere Prep hard yesterday as they were missing 7 players, many of them starters.  Throw in an injured player from the previous night’s win over North Broward Prep and the outcome almost seemed pre-determined. Any trip to Calvary is fun for me due to my relationships with Coach Bond (fresh off his Lou Gehrig to my Wally Pipp for PBA broadcasts), Assistant Coach Gary Fuchs, AD Kevin  Huisman, etc., and that was added to with being able to see how Windermere Prep Head Coach JoJo Marasco was coming along in building his program.  The former Syracuse standout . . . I don’t hold that against him . . . and current NY Lizards MLL player . . . I don’t hold that against him either . . . is patiently taking his time in building the sport throughout the K-12 the school provides.  Located between downtown Orlando and Disney it is a great location to build a program, with many options for schools to play.  I had missed their trip south last year and at the Launch-Lizards game I promised to catch him this season.     Both of these programs are sort of in that middle stage of improvement, winning the games for the most part they should win but not yet beating the better teams on their schedules.  Enough talent to show promise but not yet deep enough to be in the discussion for an FHSAA berth.  CC was coming off the three-day break while WP, as noted, had played the previous night and it certainly looked like that played a role as WP’s legs were clearly not there to open the game. CC jumped out early and took it from there in the first half, as Thomforde played the role of off ball, unlike what he was playing the first few times I saw him, looking to create his own shot.  And it suited him just fine.  The only real issue CC had the entire game was the first quarter shooting, where they only hit the cage with 10 of their 24 shot attempts, but 5 found the back of the net.  The rest of the game turned out fine for them and the fourth quarter was time for the younger kids to get their reps.  For Windermere very little went right and that also comes with the territory when a program is building itself. But as always, CC is a fine host after the game and the pizza and camaraderie was relaxing and put everyone in the mood for the rest of the weekend.  I spent my afternoon watching some college lacrosse on the big screen, falling asleep for a nice afternoon nap, and when awoken, spent a nice quiet night at home with the ‘missus’, something I don’t get to do very often when the season is in full stream.  Up north, Oxbridge and Jupiter were finishing their northern weekend trips in fine fashion, playing at JU, book-ending the JU-Bellarmine game.  We ran that model down here a few years ago and I’m really glad to see that happening in other areas of the state.  A true model to look to for the future.   Here’s the quarter by quarter scoring plays: 1st Quarter 10:47 – CC 1-0 – Thomforde right alley dodge and right hand to the top left 6:40 – CC 2-0 – Luke Davis finding Thomforde on the left wing from right wing for the step down 4:26 – CC 3-0 – Thomforde with the step dodge right from the left side 2:44 – CC 4-0 – Noah Horne finding Thomforde on the left wing from right GLE 1:36 – CC 5-0 – Thomforde left wing dodge to the right   2nd Quarter 11:33 – CC 6-0 – Davis with the left alley dodge and left hand 10:40 – CC 7-0 – Barrett Hickey finding Thomforde from right GLE to the right wing for the step down 8:00 – CC 8-0 – Ben Stephenson up the right alley with the right hand 7:53 – CC 9-0 – Thomforde from Eric Stephenson in the middle after the clean faceoff win 5:23 – CC 10-0 – Thomforde taking the feed on the right crease all alone 2:43 – CC 11-0 – Thomforde from Andrew Mortgat on right top in the middle 0:25 – WP 11-1 – Michael Gallagher with kind of a hockey goal with the tip off the Andrew Hunter feed   3rd Quarter 6:12 – CC 12-1 – Horne from Ben Stephenson all alone on the right crease 4:27 – WP 12-2 – Ross Fournet taking the Gallagher feed on the left wing for the step down 3:55 – CC 13-2 – Davis unassisted on the dodge to the middle 1:43 – CC 14-2 – Hickey with the shot alone in the middle 0:19 – CC 15-2 – Ben Stephenson finishing the fast break pass from Ajay Joseph on the left wing   4th Quarter 6:19 – CC 16-2 – Ben Stephenson taking the Ethan Wyman feed while cutting to the middle 3:36 – WP 16-3 – Fournet unassisted on the right alley after splitting two defenders   One team a little ahead of the other in their development and one team missing too many players.  Next year this will be a competitive game.  Congrats to young Mr. Thomforde as he certainly took advantage of the growth in his game. Calvary is back in action on Tuesday, travelling to district rival Cardinal Gibbons while Windermere Prep returns to action on Thursday with a home game against district foe Freedom of Orlando.   Team Statistics   Faceoffs:  11 each Shots: CC 43-23 Shots on Goal:  CC 25-15 Turnovers:  WP 23-16 Penalties:  CC 2-0   Individual Statistics   CC Jason Thomforde  9G Ben Stephenson  3G/1A Luke Davis  2G/1A Noah Horne and Barrett Hickey  1G/1A Andrew Mortgat, Eric Stephenson, Ethan Wyman and Ajay Joseph with 1A each Ben Fuchs and Hoyt Eller combined for 12 saves   WP Ross Fournet  2G Michael Gallagher  1G/1A Andrew Hunter  1A Jack Mayfield with 9 saves   Thanks to Coach Bond and Coach Marasco for talking to me before and after the game
