Tars Open Sunshine State Conference Play with Key Win, Earn Third Straight Victory

WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 24, 2018) – After a week off from competition, the RV/20 Rollins men’s lacrosse team welcomed No. 18/14 Lynn University to Cahall-Sandspur Field to open up the Sunshine State Conference portion of their schedule.  Despite an early 2-0 deficit, the Tars fought back and secured an 8-7 win over the Fighting Knights. The win marks the third straight for the Tars, and moves them to a record of 3-3, and 1-0 in SSC action.  The loss marks just the second for Lynn this season, and drops the Fighting Knights to a record of 7-2 and 0-1 in SSC play. Jackson Colling and Joey Cinque led the way for the Tars with two goals apiece, while Greg Taicher, Jeremy Slocumb, Connor Ashton, and Tommy Keane scored one goal apiece.  Slocumb and Taicher dished out a team best two assists each, while Ashton earned one on the afternoon.  Senior goalie Andrew Hoemann had a career day as he led the team with four ground balls, and earned a new career high 14 saves to help keep the Fighting Knights off the board.  Both Austin Jackson and Chase Snyder walked away from the game with two caused turnovers each.  The Tars were stymied at the faceoff-x, winning just 4-of-19 on the day. Lynn saw a team best two goals from Xander Cosenza, while Mikey Urso, Keegan Maxwell, Conrad Rhein, Stephen Polsinelli, and Nick Howard notched one goal each.  Rhein, Polsinellie, Howeard, and Tyler Hopkins each dished out one assist apiece.  Leading the game in ground balls was Dryden Brous with 10 as he won an impressive 15-of-19 faceoff attempts.  Peter Masters walked away from the day with a team best two caused turnovers.  In goal, Collin McClelland played a full 60 minutes, earning 13 saves while allowing eight goals. HOW IT HAPPENED:

• First Quarter:  The Tars found themselves in an early 2-0 deficit as the Fighting Knights opened up the game with a 2-0 lead with 12:20 on the clock.  But the Tars fought back, scoring three straight to close out the first quarter holding onto a 3-2 lead.
• Second Quarter:  The second quarter got off to a slow start, with the first goal of the period coming at the 5:46 mark to pull Lynn even with Rollins, 3-3.  Cinque notched an unassisted goal at the 4:13 mark to give Rollins the 4-3 edge, but a goal by the Fighting Knights just 12 seconds later knotted the score at 4-4 with 4:01 to go.  Rollins was not about to back down, and Taicher connected a feed to Slocumb for the goal with 1:26 left on the clock to give the Tars a 5-4 lead at the break.
• Third Quarter:  The third quarter was slow, with the lone goal coming from Ashton off of an assist by Slocumb at the 4:51 mark to give Rollins a 6-4 lead entering into the final period.
• Fourth Quarter:  The Tars opened up the final period with two straight, taking an 8-4 lead with 5:10 to play.  A late flurry of action in the final minute and a half saw the Fighting Knights score with 1:20, 11 seconds, and just 2.7 seconds on the clock, pulling to within one goal, 8-7.  On the final faceoff, Snyder was able to win possession for the Tars to close out the final seconds of the contest to help Rollins earn the win.

  NOTES:

• The Tars received votes on the USILA Division II Coaches Poll this week, and moved into the standings on the NIKE/US Lacrosse Division II Men’s Top 20 this week, earning the No. 20 slot.
• The Fighting Knights checked in on both polls this week, getting the nod at No. 18 on the USILA DII Coaches Poll, while sitting 14th on the NIKE/USL Top 20.
• Jackson Colling matched a season best two goals.
• Andrew Hoemann earned a new career best in saves and ground balls with 14 and four, respectively.
• Rollins now leads the all-time series with the Fighting Knights, 4-1.
• Freshman Kyle Sudol currently sits third in program record books for Faceoff Win Percentage.  Sudol has won 60-of-104 attempts, and currently holds onto a win percentage of .577.
• With 74 overall points, Greg Taicher sits sixth in program record books for points in a career.  Taicher also sits seventh overall in career goals (52) and has moved into seventh in career assists (22).
• Jeremy Slocumb has moved into the program record books for career assists, having earned 13 to place him in a tie for 17^th.
• Connor Ashton currently sits 16^th in program record books for career points (44), 15^th for career goals (26), and 11^th for career assists (18).
• Lucas Brush has earned 121 ground balls, and sits sixth in program record books for ground balls in a career.  The Dublin, Ohio native is also currently fifth in program record books for career caused turnovers with 49.  He currently sits 28 CT’s behind program leader Nick Scannapieco (2010-13) who amassed 77 in his career.

No. 18 Lacrosse Nearly Completes Comeback in League Opener

Winter Park, Fla. – Lynn University’s 18^th-ranked lacrosse team opened Sunshine State Conference play on Saturday and trailed 8-4 at Rollins College with under 1:30 to play. The Fighting Knights buried three straight goals in the final 90 seconds of regulation but it was too little too late as the Tars held on for an 8-7 victory. • Xander Cosenza was the only Fighting Knight to notch a multi-goal game, scoring one in the first quarter and one in the fourth. Three of his four shots on the day found the frame.
• Conrad Rhein, Stephen Polsinelli and Nick Howard all logged two points apiece behind a goal and an assist.
• Attackers Mikey Urso and Keegan Maxwell rounded out Lynn’s goal scorers while Tyler Hopkins tallied an assist.
• Despite the loss, Collin McClelland had a big day in the cage, recording a season-high 13 saves.
• Dryden Brous had himself another all-star performance at the X, taking all 19 faceoffs and winning 15 (78.9%) while leading all players on the field with 10 ground balls.
• Peter Masters led the defensive effort with two caused turnovers and two ground balls.

  BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

• Each of the past two matchups between these teams were decided by one goal as the Tars defeated Lynn last season in Boca Raton in overtime, 12-11.
• Lynn entered today’s contest on a six-game winning streak.
• Brous now has double-digit ground balls in six of the team’s nine games this season.
• Polsinelli has at least two points in every game this year.
• Drew Custance earned his second consecutive starting nod. He picked up three ground balls in today’s game.
• McClelland logged double-digit saves for the first time this season.
• It was a rather clean game with just three called penalties between the two sides.
• Lynn failed to score 10+ goals for just the second time this season.
• The Fighting Knights didn’t record a man-up goal for the first time this year.
