FIT Men: 3 Assistant Coaches Named

  via FIT press releases   Billy Gibbs     MELBOURNE, Fla. – Florida Tech head coach Mark Penn has announced the addition of Billy Gibbs to the men’s lacrosse coaching staff as a volunteer assistant coach for the 2020 season. “I’m very excited to add Billy to our coaching staff,” said Penn. “Coach Gibbs grew up and learned the game in one of the most prominent lacrosse areas in the country. He has truly learned from some of the best. He had success as a player and proven that he is a tremendous coach that has a lot to offer to our student-athletes. I’m very thankful to have him on board and can’t wait to see the impact that he has on our program.” Gibbs will work with the Midfielders and assist with both the Offensive and Defensive game plans. He comes to Florida Tech after spending the past two years working with high school and club lacrosse programs in the Space Coast area. In 2017-18, he served as Assistant Coach at local Viera High School where he ran the offense and assisted all areas of the program. He currently serves as Head Coach/Director of the Space Coast Stingrays, a club team based in Viera, Florida. Gibbs is a 2016 graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute where he was a captain and All-Conference defensive midfielder. He was born in Stony Brook, New York and attended and played high school lacrosse at traditional powerhouse Ward Melville Away from the whistle, Gibbs works as an engineer at Northrup Grumman in Melbourne. Wynne joins the staff as assistant coach and offensive coordinator. He is charged with running the Panthers’ offense, with a focus on mentoring the attack unit. He will also assist in all areas of the program including recruiting and fundraising. “I am thrilled to have Zach retuning to Florida Tech,” exclaimed Penn. “He was very impactful as a player here and I expect him to have an even greater impact as a coach. “Zach has a tremendous knowledge of the game and an ability to translate that to the players. He is going to be a great coach and I’m glad that he chose to start off here with us. Zach has a keen offensive mind and I am looking forward to seeing him put his stamp on this group.” The Sykesville, Maryland native played one season for Florida Tech in 2014-15. That year he was named to the All-Sunshine State Conference Second Team after starting all 16 games and leading the Panthers with 54 points on 27 goals and 27 assists, while also collecting 35 ground balls. He finished tied for second in the SSC in assist during the 2015 season. Wynne’s 54 points are still a single-season record for Tech. He also set a pair of single-game records for points (8) and assists (5) in separate games that year. However, both were broken this past season when Logan Sweeney put up 10 points and six assists in Tech’s 24-6 victory over Nichols College. Wynne graduated from Florida Tech in 2016 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Communications. Oblong will serve as graduate assistant coach and will work with the Panther defense as well as assist in recruiting and fundraising. “Tyler will step seamlessly into his new role,” said Penn. “He was a great leader as a player, and that maturity garnered him a tremendous amount of respect from his teammates. Now, he brings his knowledge to the sidelines where he will make us a better team. “Coach Oblong will take the reigns of the defense and is very prepared to lead that group. I’m extremely excited to see Tyler step into this new role and launch a coaching career that will impact many lives.” A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Oblong was a two-year member of the Florida Tech men’s lacrosse team, playing in 2018 and 2019. He appeared in 25 games over that time and recorded 10 points, 39 ground balls and 10 caused turnovers. This past season in 2019 Oblong was named to the All-SSC Honorable Mention team as a short-stick defender. He played in 12 of Tech’s contests last year and posted 28 ground balls, four caused turnovers, three goals and one assist. In the top game of his career, Oblong notched six ground balls, two caused turnovers, a goal and an assist in the Panthers’ dominant 24-6 victory over Nichols College last season Oblong graduate from Florida Tech in spring 2019 with a degree in Business Administration. He will begin his Master’s in Business Administration at Florida Tech in spring 2020.
