Two games were on tap for Division 1 Men yesterday and Florida kids hit the scoresheet for 3 of the 4 games!
Denver hosted Utah yesterday and the Pioneers came away with the 9-8 victory, but Cardinal Mooney’s MJ McMahon accounted for an assist as a starter for the Utes and Ponte Vedra’s Davis Smith got runs on defense and was called for a :30 penalty.
In the other game it was Bellarmine topping Mercer 9-7 as Benjamin’s Griffin Bowie recorded a goal for Bellarmine.
Mercer comes into the season as the predominant recruiter of Florida talent, as there are FOURTEEN Florida natives on the roster and 4 were Starters according to the Stat Sheet! Nease’s Ashton Wood, Mercer’s faceoff star, and one of the highest returning win percentages in America, went 18 for 19 at the dot and on the first one went straight downfield to record the FIRST goal of the NCAA D1 season, just 7 seconds into the game:
The other three Mercer starters from the Sunshine State are Parker Junod of Plant, Kyle Cox of Oak Hall and Danny Walsh of St. Edward’s! Junod recorded an assist and if I’m reading the Stat sheet correctly Connor Purcell of Hagerty and Matthew Winegardner of Maclay also got playing time. If I’m leaving someone out please let me know. All in all a good day for Florida at the D1 level!.@MercerLacrosse’s Ashton Wood, one of the best face-off specialists in DI last season, scored off the opening draw of the 2021 season.
