via FSC press release   ALBANY, NY – Joe Appio‘s goal with just over a minute to go capped off a late rally as Florida Southern College men’s lacrosse overcame a late two-goal deficit in a 10-9 win over the College of Saint Rose on Friday afternoon. The Moccasins (3-2) led by four goals at the half, but the Golden Knights (1-3) scored five-straight to open the third quarter and led by two (9-7) with just over seven minutes to go. However, Florida Southern scored three times in the span of four minutes in the fourth quarter to sneak away with the win. The Moccasins will face one of the nation’s top teams on Sunday when they take on No. 2 Le Moyne at 12 p.m. HOW IT HAPPENED • Lucas Claude got the Mocs on the board first when he scored on a feed from Carson Wallace with 12:40 to go in the first. After Saint Rose tied things up less than a minute later, Appio would put home his first goal of the day to make it 2-1 with 10:33 to go. The Golden Knights again tied things up quickly with the equalizer at the 7:35 mark, but the Moccasins scored twice in the final five minutes to grab a 4-2 lead after one period of play. • The Mocs continued their momentum in the second quarter by scoring twice and holding Saint Rose scoreless. Claude scored again at the 13:52 mark and Kevin Dyer tacked on another goal with 1:26 to go in the opening half. Florida Southern’s defense was suffocating in the second quarter, holding the Golden Knights to just four shots while forcing four turnovers in the period • The game changed drastically in the third quarter as Saint Rose ripped off a 5-0 scoring run to snag a 7-6 lead at the 3:24 mark. However, the Mocs would get late life as Dalton Simpson scored with 2:06 to go in the third to put the game even at 7-7. • In the fourth quarter, Saint Rose looked as if it had put the game away by scoring the first two goals of the period. Trailing 9-7 with less than four minutes to go, Wallace scored back-to-back goals to tie things up before Appio put home the game-winner with just 1:26 on the clock. Kevin Horwitz won the ensuing faceoff as Blaine Preston snagged the groundball and the Mocs ran out the clock. • Wallace led Florida Southern with three goals, while Appio and Claude each tallied two. Simpson finished with three assists, while Mike Greco made nine saves in goal. Preston, Simpson and Roy Decker collected four ground balls each. INSIDE THE NUMBERS • Friday’s meeting was the first-ever between Florida Southern and Saint Rose. • The Mocs outshot the Golden Knights 51-31, had a 40-30 advantage in ground balls and won 10-of-23 faceoffs. Each team completed 18-of-21 clear attempts, and Saint Rose committed 17 total turnovers. UP NEXT • Florida Southern will face No. 2 Le Moyne at 12 p.m. on Sunday. The Mocs return home on Saturday, March 17 to take on Colorado Mesa.
