Moccasins Close Out March at Lynn with Fourth-Straight Win

BOCA RATON, FL – Florida Southern College men’s lacrosse ended March with its second Sunshine State Conference victory of the season as it took down the Lynn University Fighting Knights, 14-12, on Saturday night. The Moccasins (7-3, 2-0 SSC) rallied back from an early 3-0 deficit to take down the Knights (7-3, 0-2), and Lucas Claude had another big game as he scored five goals to help the Moccasins extend their winning streak to four games.
Claude, who put up nine goals in a win over Alabama-Huntsville on Wednesday, and Kevin Dyer, who finished with four goals against the Knights, continue to lead a potent Florida Southern attack that has scored double-digit goals in four-straight games. HOW IT HAPPENED • Lynn got on the board first at the 13:29 mark of the first quarter, and would add goals at 12:15 and 12:12 to jump out to a 3-0 lead. At 10:46 in the first, Claude put Florida Southern on the board and within the next five minutes, the Mocs tied it up on unassisted goals from Liam Winwood and Austen Lison. On a man-up opportunity, Lynn would regain the lead at 5:18 but, with less than two minutes remaining in the first Claude tied the game up at 4-4. • The Knights would put the first two goals of the second quarter on the board in the first six minutes of the period to take a 6-4 lead. However, the Mocs responded with a pair of second-quarter goals as Joe Appio recorded his fifth goal on the season on a man-up chance and Claude recorded his third of the game on another man-up opportunity to tie things at 6-6. Lynn would tack on a goal with 3:25 to go in the first half to take a 7-6 lead into the locker room. The one-goal halftime deficit marked the first time the Mocs had trailed at the half during their four-game win streak. • Just 24 seconds into the third, Claude opened the second half scoring and at 8:17 Dyer would give the Mocs their first lead of the game (8-7). Lynn would quickly even the score as the Mocs first lead would only last a minute and 24 seconds after the Knights struck for the equalizer at the 6:53 mark. Neither team would find the back of the net for the remainder of the third quarter as the game headed to the fourth tied at 8-8. • Dyer wasted no time in giving the Mocs the lead again when he scored with 14:18 to go in the fourth, a lead that the Florida Southern would never relinquish. Colin Bayer would give the Moccasins their first two-goal lead (10-8) at 13:25 in the fourth. Lynn would respond with an unassisted goal at 12:47, but Florida Southern would score the next four goals to put things out of reach. • With 4:40 remaining Claude scored his team-leading 32nd goal of the season to put the Mocs up 14-9. Lynn put together a rally in the final 3:05 as they cut Florida Southern’s lead to just two goals. After a Lynn timeout at 27 seconds, the Fighting Knights would take their final shot of the game only to see Mike Greco make his 16th and final save of the night as the Moccasins would leave Boca Raton with a 14-12 SSC victory. INSIDE THE NUMBERS • Saturday’s win put the all-time regular season record against Lynn back in the Mocs favor, 3-2. Last year, the Mocs were defeated 11-8 at home. • Adding to his nine goals on Wednesday against UAH, Claude scored five goals to bring his weekly total to 14 goals. The most of any SSC men’s lacrosse student-athlete in the last seven days. • Florida Southern’s 14 goals marked the seventh time this season that the Moccasins have scored at least 10 goals. The Mocs have won all seven games in which they have hit double-digits in goals. The Moccasins and the Fighting Knights both forced 14 turnovers, but FSC outshot Lynn 40-39 while Lynn held the advantage with 23-of-30 faceoffs won. • Dyer led the Mocs with 13 shots, while Austen Lison led the Mocs with 11 ground balls and scored his first goal of the year. Greco picked up his seventh win in goal this season while making 16 total saves, the sixth time this year that he has made double-digit saves. UP NEXT • Florida Southern is again on the road as they take on SSC rival Tampa on Wednesday. The Mocs will return home for three-straight conference matchups to close out the home portion of their schedule before finishing the regular season with the first-ever meeting with the Embry-Riddle Eagles in Daytona on April 21st.   *****   via Lynn press release
