JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Making its second-straight appearance in the Southern Conference Tournament, the #3 seed Jacksonville University men’s lacrosse looks to avenge its two-goal regular season loss and snap #2 High Point’s five-game win streak as the Dolphins take on the Panthers in the tournament semifinals at Robins Stadium on the campus of the University of Richmond, tonight at 8 p.m.
Setting the Scene
- The Dolphins enter Saturday’s contest with a 7-6 overall record, and the tournament’s #3 seed after posting a 5-2 mark in the SoCon.
- Six players were named All-SoCon, and senior Hunter Forbes was named SoCon Defensive Player of the Year and John Galloway was named SoCon Coach of the Year.
- Four players were named to the First Team – Eric Applegate, McLean Chicquen, Hunter Forbes, and Ryan Beville – while Dixon Smith was named to the Second Team.
- Smith and Jeremy Winston were also All-Freshman Team honorees.
- Freshman Dixon Smith is ranked 21st on the Inside Lacrosse DI Midseason Freshman Rankings.
- Averaging 1.77 caused turnovers per game, Smith leads the team with 23 caused turnovers and is fourth on the team with 28 ground balls.
- Moving On Up: Junior Eric Applegate ranks third all-time in JU program history with 97 points.
- Only Cameron Mann (139) and TJ Kenary (109) have scored more points in their respective careers.
- Applegate is also tied second all-time with 48 career assists, and ranks fourth with 48 goals.
- Riding a 30-game streak with at least one ground ball, senior Hunter Forbes has won at least 50% or more of his face offs this season.
- The Woodstock, Ga. native leads the SoCon and ranks among the top three in the nation in face off winning percentage (.712 – 3rd) and ground balls per game (10.77 – 3rd).
- As a team, the Dolphins rank among the nation’s top five in face off winning percentage (.709 – 3rd) and ground balls per game (34.15 – 4th).
- Jacksonville also leads the SoCon in assists per game (6.54), points per game (18.15), scoring offense (11.62), scoring margin (1.13), and shot percentage (.330).
- The Dolphins look to snap High Point’s five-game win streak and make its first-ever appearance in the SoCon Tournament final
- Three Dolphins were selected in the 2018 MLL Collegiate Draft, held two weeks ago at the US Lacrosse headquarters in Sparks, Md.
- The trio joins Duncan Clancy (MLL – Florida Launch) and Cameron Mann (NLL – Colorado Mammoth) as the only Dolphins to be drafted into the professional lacrosse ranks.
- Face off specialist Hunter Forbes was selected by the Atlanta Blaze in the fifth round as the 40th overall pick.
- A native of Woodstock, Ga., Forbes’ hometown is just a 20 minute drive to Fifth Third Bank where the Blaze play.
- Short-stick defensive midfielder Ryan Beville was picked up by the Florida Launch in the sixth round as the 52nd overall pick.
- Beville joins former Dolphin Duncan Clancy as the only two JU players to be drafted by the MLL’s lone team in the state of Florida.
- Midfielder McLean Chicquen was chosen by the Dallas Rattlers at the 60th overall pick.
- Chicquen joins head coach John Galloway as part of the Rattlers; Galloway opted to stay with the team after their offseason move from Rochester, N.Y. to Dallas.
- Among the nation’s best in face offs, senior Hunter Forbes has won 50% or more of his opportunities at the X this season for a 13-game streak.
- He is also riding a 30-game streak with at least one ground ball, dating back to the 2016 season.
- Tied for first on the team with 22 goals and third with 28 points so far, sophomore Dwayne Mattushik has posted a point in each of the last 17 games.
- The Panthers enter Thursday’s contest with a 6-7 overall record and the #2 seed in the tournament after closing out the SoCon slate, 6-1.
- High Point is also riding a five-game win streak into the tournament.
- The SoCon leader in points per game (4.92) and assists per game (2.62), freshman Asher Nolting earned SoCon Offensive Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year, All-SoCon First Team, and All-Freshman Team honors.
- Connor Robinson and Tim Troutner Jr. took home Second Team honors.
- Robinson leads the SoCon with 2.46 goals per game, while Troutner has a .516 save percentage and a 11.15 goals-against average.
- High Point holds a 6-1 advantage in the all-time series with the Dolphins.
- Jacksonville fell, 11-9, on the road to the Panthers earlier this season, and the loss was one of just two blemishes on the Dolphins’ SoCon record.
- Eric Applegate dished out four assist to lead the team during the regular season matchup, while Shawn Ewert and Gavin Dembeck added a pair of goals each.
- Hunter Forbes finished 14-22 at the face off X with six ground balls, while Hunter Sells and Ben Gleichenhaus split time in the crease, with Gleichenhaus making nine stops in the loss.
- Jacksonville is receiving votes mention in the national polls this week, receiving votes in the Nike/USILA Coaches’ Poll (April 30).
- It marks the second time this season, as the Dolphins were also receiving votes in the March 5 poll, making it the first time in school history Jacksonville Men’s Lacrosse was mentioned in a national poll.
- Five Dolphins have been recognized by the SoCon for their performances on the field throughout the season.
- Most recently, junior goalie Hunter Sells earned SoCon Defensive Player of the Week honors after holding Bellarmine to a season-low five goals, blanking the Knights on two extra-man opportunities, while recorded nine saves and picking up a season-high seven ground balls to help the Dolphins down Bellarmine, 9-5. http://judolphins.com/sports/mlax/2017-18/releases/20180327kfdcor
- Junior Eric Applegate was named SoCon Offensive Player of the Month for February after posting a team-high 18 points (12g, 8a). … In each of the five games in February, the Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. native recorded at least one point, and totaled no less than four in the other four contests.
- Freshmen Jeremy Winston and Dixon Smith swept the SoCon weekly awards on Feb. 27 as the Dallas, Texas duo were named Offensive Player of the Week and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively. Winston hung five goals in the Dolphins’ 11-10 overtime loss to then-No. 4 Ohio State in the 2018 Moe’s Lacrosse Classic – the most scored by a Dolphin against a ranked opponent in program history; previously in the week, he recorded a hat trick to help Jacksonville down Detroit Mercy, 15-8. … Smith’s impressive lockdown defense, along with his team-leading four-ground ball, four-caused turnover day, held the Buckeyes’ All-American attackman Tre Leclaire scoreless through 59 minutes of action.
- Senior Hunter Forbes took home SoCon Offensive Player of the Week honors on Feb. 13 after he won 19 of 22 opportunities at the X and scooped up 13 ground balls in the Dolphins’ season-opening victory over Navy, 12-7. … Forbes was also named to the first USILA Team of the Week for that performance.
