JU Men: #3 Men’s Lacrosse Looks to Avenge Regular Season Loss in SoCon Semifinal

  • The Dolphins enter Saturday’s contest with a 7-6 overall record, and the tournament’s #3 seed after posting a 5-2 mark in the SoCon.
  • Six players were named All-SoCon, and senior Hunter Forbes was named SoCon Defensive Player of the Year and John Galloway was named SoCon Coach of the Year.
  • Four players were named to the First Team – Eric ApplegateMcLean ChicquenHunter Forbes, and Ryan Beville – while Dixon Smith was named to the Second Team.
  • Smith and Jeremy Winston were also All-Freshman Team honorees.
  • Freshman Dixon Smith is ranked 21st on the Inside Lacrosse DI Midseason Freshman Rankings.
  • Averaging 1.77 caused turnovers per game, Smith leads the team with 23 caused turnovers and is fourth on the team with 28 ground balls.
  • Moving On Up: Junior Eric Applegate ranks third all-time in JU program history with 97 points.
  • Only Cameron Mann (139) and TJ Kenary (109) have scored more points in their respective careers.
  • Applegate is also tied second all-time with 48 career assists, and ranks fourth with 48 goals.
  • Riding a 30-game streak with at least one ground ball, senior Hunter Forbes has won at least 50% or more of his face offs this season.
  • The Woodstock, Ga. native leads the SoCon and ranks among the top three in the nation in face off winning percentage (.712 – 3rd) and ground balls per game (10.77 – 3rd).
  • As a team, the Dolphins rank among the nation’s top five in face off winning percentage (.709 – 3rd) and ground balls per game (34.15 – 4th).
  • Jacksonville also leads the SoCon in assists per game (6.54), points per game (18.15), scoring offense (11.62), scoring margin (1.13), and shot percentage (.330).
  • The Dolphins look to snap High Point’s five-game win streak and make its first-ever appearance in the SoCon Tournament final
  Feeling Drafty
  • Three Dolphins were selected in the 2018 MLL Collegiate Draft, held two weeks ago at the US Lacrosse headquarters in Sparks, Md.
  • The trio joins Duncan Clancy (MLL – Florida Launch) and Cameron Mann (NLL – Colorado Mammoth) as the only Dolphins to be drafted into the professional lacrosse ranks.
  • Face off specialist Hunter Forbes was selected by the Atlanta Blaze in the fifth round as the 40th overall pick.
  • A native of Woodstock, Ga., Forbes’ hometown is just a 20 minute drive to Fifth Third Bank where the Blaze play.
  • Short-stick defensive midfielder Ryan Beville was picked up by the Florida Launch in the sixth round as the 52nd overall pick.
  • Beville joins former Dolphin Duncan Clancy as the only two JU players to be drafted by the MLL’s lone team in the state of Florida.
  • Midfielder McLean Chicquen was chosen by the Dallas Rattlers at the 60th overall pick.
  • Chicquen joins head coach John Galloway as part of the Rattlers; Galloway opted to stay with the team after their offseason move from Rochester, N.Y. to Dallas.
  Going Streaking
  • Among the nation’s best in face offs, senior Hunter Forbes has won 50% or more of his opportunities at the X this season for a 13-game streak.
  • He is also riding a 30-game streak with at least one ground ball, dating back to the 2016 season.
  • Tied for first on the team with 22 goals and third with 28 points so far, sophomore Dwayne Mattushik has posted a point in each of the last 17 games.
  Scouting #2 High Point
  • The Panthers enter Thursday’s contest with a 6-7 overall record and the #2 seed in the tournament after closing out the SoCon slate, 6-1.
  • High Point is also riding a five-game win streak into the tournament.
  • The SoCon leader in points per game (4.92) and assists per game (2.62), freshman Asher Nolting earned SoCon Offensive Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year, All-SoCon First Team, and All-Freshman Team honors.
  • Connor Robinson and Tim Troutner Jr. took home Second Team honors.
  • Robinson leads the SoCon with 2.46 goals per game, while Troutner has a .516 save percentage and a 11.15 goals-against average.
  Series History vs. the Panthers
  • High Point holds a 6-1 advantage in the all-time series with the Dolphins.
  • Jacksonville fell, 11-9, on the road to the Panthers earlier this season, and the loss was one of just two blemishes on the Dolphins’ SoCon record.
  • Eric Applegate dished out four assist to lead the team during the regular season matchup, while Shawn Ewert and Gavin Dembeck added a pair of goals each.
  • Hunter Forbes finished 14-22 at the face off X with six ground balls, while Hunter Sells and Ben Gleichenhaus split time in the crease, with Gleichenhaus making nine stops in the loss.
  In the Polls
  • Jacksonville is receiving votes mention in the national polls this week, receiving votes in the Nike/USILA Coaches’ Poll (April 30).
  • It marks the second time this season, as the Dolphins were also receiving votes in the March 5 poll, making it the first time in school history Jacksonville Men’s Lacrosse was mentioned in a national poll.
  SoCon So Good   Up Next The SoCon Tournament Championship, hosted by the University of Richmond at Robins Stadium, is set for Saturday, May 5 at 2 p.m. The winner will receive the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
