Belen’s Breakthrough Win Photos
Thanks to the success of the Belen Jesuit and Gulliver Prep programs, and the early afternoon schedule, this author (actually photographer) has had the opportunity to see first hand the growth of our sport in Miami-Dade County. Gulliver has historically competed at the highest level in Florida and many graduates have continued to play in college. Coach Jim Piggot, now in his tenth year, is one of FLN’s favorites, and a very little known fact is he was an early tweeter of play-off games for our site.
Across town, former St. Andrew’s assistant coach Alan Bellando took the helm of Belen five years ago and has steadily improved the program each year, reaching its first FHSAA Elite Eight appearance with a convincing win yesterday over Gulliver. Sound pretty good? Sure, but this team saw thirteen mostly senior players injured and the group which won this playoff game was populated heavily with freshmen and sophomores. Belen’s trend is absolutely headed in the right direction, and don’t be surprised if we write about an upset after Coach Bellando returns to his former home field to take on the Scots Friday night. Congratulations to all.
