DOLPHINS FALL SHORT AT #13/17 RICHMOND

  BOX SCORE JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville University men’s lacrosse team (6-5, 3-1 SoCon) suffered a setback on Saturday afternoon opposite No. 13/17 Richmond (5-4, 4-0), falling 14-7, on the road. “Richmond continues to be the standard of our conference, and they showed why today,” head coach John Galloway said. “I thought that we showed we were ready for the challenge in the first half, but our biggest challenge continues to be us. I am encouraged and excited for this team because I saw flashes of a team that is capable of doing something special. However, we have to address the discipline and emotional immaturity when things get chaotic. I remain steadfast in my belief and confidence with this team, but recognize that our work load will be heavy if we want to be back here in three weeks to achieve something special.” The Spiders jumped out to a two-goal lead before Jacob Greiner broke the seal for the JU at the 12:27 mark in the second quarter. The two sides combined to score seven goals in the second after the Dolphins held the high-powered Richmond offense to just two scores in the first. Richmond native Evan Tyler scored during that second frame and Jack Dolan canned one to leave JU in a 6-3 hole at the break. Tyler secured his second goal in the third quarter but Richmond scored seven in the frame to move ahead 13-4 with just the fourth quarter left to play. The Dolphins outscored the Spiders, 3-1, down the stretch but it proved to be too little, too late. Greiner scored his second and Matt Stagnitta closed out the scoring with back-to-back goals in the final 3:14 to leave the difference at 14-7.  Stagnitta became the second Dolphin, joining Dolan, to reach the 20-goal plateau. “I do want to recognize the individual efforts of Colin Hinton, Jordan Young, Dixon Smith and Zack Deaken today on the defensive end,” Galloway continued. “They didn’t back down from a battle, and that will help us going forward. The biggest game of our year is next Saturday. We will act accordingly this week at practice.” Next up for Jacksonville will be the final home tilt of the 2021 season when it welcomes Bellarmine back to D.B. Milne Field for a rematch of the season-opener. Jacksonville won that non-conference matchup 19-8 and this time around the game will get started on Noon on Apr. 24.
