Noteworthy events during game

The Ponte Vedra Lady Sharks (15-3) hosted Episcopal High School (14-4) in the Class 1A District 4 Championship Thursday night. Both teams came in to the contest on winning streaks with both records at 14-3. The Eagles of Episcopal came out flying the first half and took an early 2-1 lead. The Sharks of Ponte Vedra had to regroup and settled down. With a combination of great team defense and timely goals, PV took a lead in at halftime 9-5. The second half had the Sharks firing on all cylinders both on offense and on defense. The Eagles continued to fight and made numerous pass and cuts to the net but they were either swarmed by the PV defense or stopped by the goalie. In the end, the final score was 18-7 with a PV win.

Ponte Vedra’s offense was produced by Sammi Lowinger (5 goals), Pierson Schuchart (5 goals), Taylor Rocha (3 goals) and Tori Balser (2 goals). The Sharks defense was led by Eliza Lewin, Trish Balser, Sarah James and Kenzie Conway. PV’s Goalie Courtney Rausch was the difference in net turning away 10 Episcopal point blank shots. The Eagles top offensive players continue to attack the crease for goals with Sophia Chepenik (3 Goals), Olivia Parker, Lily Porreca, Mia Carter and Keeley Cleland (JU) each chipping in with a goal.

The victory makes Ponte Vedra the 2021 Class 1A District 4 Champions and they will enter the first round of the state tournament next Thursday night (opponent to be determined).
