via JU press release   JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The underclassmen made left their mark as Jacksonville University women’s lacrosse rolled to its sixth-straight victory with a 23-1 win over Delaware State, Saturday afternoon at D.B. Milne Field. Led by freshman Jenny Kinsey‘s eight points (2 goals, 6 assists), the Dolphins saw all but six of their 43 points scored by underclassmen. Kinsey’s six assists matched a program single-game record set by Ali Hoffman at Liberty back in 2012, while she and sophomore Parker Day (5a) combined for nine of the Dolphins’ 20 assists. Kinsey’s eight points also match the second-highest single-game point total in program history. “We have a really good younger group; we started a lot of freshmen and they played quite well,” stated Associate Head Coach Paul McCord. “The freshmen played way beyond that; it’s hard to keep the score down because they click so well. What we saw today was a good example of them exercising control. We said at halftime, eight turnovers in a half is too many; we came out in the second half and had only three.” Not only were the Dolphins (11-3, 3-0 ASUN Conference) firing on all pistons offensively, they also wreaked havoc defensively, and allowed Delaware State (0-11) to clear the ball successfully just twice on 15 attempts and caused 12 of the Hornets’ 20 turnovers. “We had really good distribution on attack, and our ride was really great. To be able to ride and prevent them from clearing without fouling – that was a big step up for us today,” noted Head Coach Mindy McCord. “We did a good job not fouling in the second half – that was one of our goals – along with controlling the draw as well. It was a great team effort and we’re thankful for the opportunity to do our Vs. Cancer game, to support their cause, and play and fight for people that are fighting for their lives.” The Dolphins’ held a 19-5 advantage on draw controls, as Kinsey and sophomore Kasey Stevenstotaled four apiece to win the possession right away. From the first half, Jacksonville improved both fouls and turnovers, going from nine fouls to just one in the second, and from eight turnovers to three in the final 30 minutes. “Our goal was to pass the ball well and improve our shooting percentage; we did those things well. We did a good job of not fouling in the second half – we played body, got in front, and did what we needed to do and let that force turnovers. Kids like Jenny Kinsey are really coming on strong and I think it’s going to be a fun stretch for us,” added Paul McCord. Jacksonville led 14-0 at halftime, as senior Ashtyn Hiron posted all four of her point in the first 2:35. Hiron scored the game’s opener 15 seconds in before she dished to junior Erin McGuire 42 seconds later. She added her second on a pass from freshman Alyssa Arnold 13 seconds later at 28:50, then scored once more on a pass from Kinsey at 27:25 to make it 5-0 Jacksonville. Additionally, six of Kinsey’s eight points were scored in the opening 30 minutes, with four assists and two goals, including one with 25 seconds left before the break. The Dolphins opened the second half on a 5-0 run before Oliva Summerville notched the Hornets’ lone goal at the 12:17 mark to make it 19-1. The Dolphins finished the game with four more tallies, from Stevens (10:25), junior Jody Julmice (7:32), freshman Emma Wisdom (5:25), and sophomore Genie Santarpio(0:07) for the game’s final 23-1 score. Freshman Olivia D’Angelo assisted on Stevens’ and Wisdom’s goals, while Day dished assists on Julmice’s and Santarpio’s tallies. Summerville (3 DC) and Lauren Perry (2 DC) combined for five draw controls, while goalie Elizabeth Henry posted seven saves and three ground balls in the loss. Looking ahead, Paul McCord added, “We’re really looking forward to rekindling our rivalries with Mercer and Kennesaw this weekend. Those programs have been really competitive and they’re really tightly contested. We’re looking forward to next weekend.” The Dolphins return to action next Friday, April 20 when play host to Mercer at 4 p.m.
