JU Women: Freshmen Lead WLAX To Single-Game Scoring Record

via JU press release   SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Efficiency, thy name is Jacksonville University women’s lacrosse. Hitting their stride just before ASUN Conference action begins, the Dolphins converted nearly 75 percent of their shots en route to a scoring a single-game record with a 29-7 win over Wofford in nonconference action Saturday afternoon at Gibbs Stadium. Jacksonville (7-3) also set a new program record with 48 points, as fifteen different players scored and 12 recorded multiple points on the day. Though she played less than a half, the Dolphins were led by senior Ashtyn Hiron, who matched her career-high marks in points (8) and draw controls (11). Averaging 3.56 goals per game this year, Hiron just six goals away from moving into fourth all-time in the Dolphin record books and just 12 away from moving into a tie for second all-time with Danielle Della Rocca and Holly Ventimiglia. With 180 career draw controls, Hiron is also just 10 away from moving into second all-time. Sophomore Olivia Alvarez (2 goals, 3 assists) and junior Erin McGuire (5a) added five points each, while junior Lillie Miller (2g, 2a) and freshmen Alyssa Arnold (3g, 1a) and Sarah Elms (3g, 1a) totaled four apiece. “After the past few weeks of hard practices, it was nice to implement everything we have learned over the season in today’s game. Our sideline kept the energy up, which directly impacts our teammates on the field,” stated Arnold. To impress just how efficient the Dolphins were, nearly half of Jacksonville’s goals (14) came on as many attempts as nine players converted each of their shots. The freshmen class accounted for 17 of the Dolphins’ 28 points from underclassmen, as seven newcomers found the back of the net. “We pushed our tempo, read the defense, as well as controlled the offense with our anticipation and good communication. My teammates allowed everyone to make outstanding plays,” stated freshman Lauren Phillips, who finished the day with three points (1g, 2a). Jenny Kinsey also tallied three points (2g, 1a), adding “It felt good to run midfield today and to play some defense. Our team played hard on the scrappy balls in the second half and it was fun to come up with the 50/50s.” “I took what I have learned in practice to the field, so I felt comfortable out there. Our team had a great game and moved the ball well, always thinking two steps ahead,” noted classmate Olivia D’Angelo, who also scored. Also notching a pair of goals, freshman Emma Wisdom added, “During the season, a lot of work goes into practice and today, I got to put a lot of my practice into the game situation; I was able to make new connections with people.” Though the Dolphins’ offensive effort was evident, Jacksonville also received a strong defensive outing as the Dolphins’ caused 14 of Wofford’s 22 turnovers, highlighted by freshman Eileen Torroella, Miller, and Arnold with two caused turnovers each. “It was a great opportunity to play with many different units and being able to be the free person on the restraining line was nice. I was able to push up on our ride and that gave our attack more opportunities to convert. Communication was very efficient during those man-down situations,” said Torroella. Miller finished the game with four points (2g, 2a), while redshirt-senior Emily Poelma recorded a save and split time in the crease with sophomore MacEllen McDonough. Jojo Franklin led Wofford with two goals and an assist, while Kelsey Thompson finished with 10 saves – nine in the first half alone – in the loss. The Dolphins return to action next weekend with a pair of road games, beginning Friday, April 6 at Old Dominion (4 p.m.) and Sunday, April 8 at Coastal Carolina (1 p.m.).
