Lawton Chiles Defeats Lincoln-Tallahassee 17-11 to Keep Its’ District 2 Championship Hopes Alive

submitted by FLN Correspondent Tom Congdon   Thursday, March 22, 2018 In its first game of the season, the Lincoln Trojans traveled to Chiles. With two goals up late in the fourth quarter, Chiles couldn’t hold on to win, losing with 26 seconds left in regulation. On a chilling night, Chiles traveled to Lincoln to see if they could return the favor by defeating the Lincoln on their own turf. Chiles took the first faceoff but a passing miscue turned the ball over to Lincoln. From there, Junior attackman Caleb Gehres (#19) rolled behind the cage and quickly found junior Bryce Correa (#4) in front of the net for a quick score at 11:01 into the first quarter. Chiles lost the next faceoff but their defense held up. Within three minutes into the game, Logan Short (#3) reeled behind the cage and passed to Sam Hartmann (#26), standing alone in front of the cage. Lincoln’s goalie Josh Roberts (#16) managed to make the save, but Chiles earned the ground ball. Logan Short dodge from behind the cage only to hit top post. Josh Sirdevan (#12) recovered the ball, but passing miscue turned the ball over. On the clear, Lincoln’s goalie threw a pass over the midfield line but it was intercepted by Chiles’ defenseman, Quinn Lassiter (#10). Lassiter quickly moved the ball to attackman Trent Fewox (#21) who found Sam Hartmann (#26) in front of the cage for Chiles first tally of the game at 8:10 in the first quarter.     Lincoln scored the next four goals – Gheres (#19), Brendan Stamper (#3), Gabriel Tornillo (#1), and Morgan Bell (#11). Two of the goals were scored off of a bad clear by Chiles and man-up. Ahead 5-1, Chiles defense seemed in disarray. Then came the goal of the night near the close of the first quarter. Defenseman Quinn Lassiter strips the ball from midfielder Yili Lui (#8), scoops up the ground ball and races down towards Lincoln goal. From the top of the box on the right wing, Lassiter finds a streaking Short down the middle. Just when it looked that Short had run out of room to make a shot on goal, he wheels a shot from behind-the-back for an amazing goal at 1.57 left in the quarter. The first quarter ends with Lincoln atop 5-2. Chiles wins the opening faceoff to start the second quarter. Quinn Lassiter moves the ball into Lincoln’s territory but manages to lose the ball. Josh Sirdevan (#12) gains control of the loose ball and finds Matt Congdon (#2) sitting atop the crease. Congdon scores to pull Chiles within two (5-3). The momentum looked liked it was swinging in Chiles favor, but Lincoln comes back and rattles off another three goals – two more for Gehres (#19) in this stretch. Towards the end of the second quarter, Chiles strikes back with goals by Trenton Fewox (#21) at 1:57 and Josh Sirdevan (#12) at 1:01. Lincoln mounts a late charge, and goes man-up with less than a minute in the quarter. With 24 seconds left in the quarter, Chiles goalie Carson Hough (#28) comes up big with a great save against Branden Stamper in front of the goal. The half closes with Lincoln up 8-6.     As the third quarter approached, one had to wonder if Chiles could muster the will to win this one and keep their District 11 championships hopes alive. The third quarter opens and Chiles’ midfielder Sean Congdon (#6) hits top post. Minutes pass with both teams exchanging possession. Matt Congdon (#2) finds a ground ball in front of Lincoln’s goal, scrambles, and makes a great dodge against a Lincoln d-pole to score and bring Chiles within 1. Score 8-7 Lincoln. From this point on, Chiles goes on 4 goal run. Matt Congdon (#2) and Logan Short (#3) score again. Trent Fewox (#21) adds another two goals. Chiles is now ahead 11-8. Two minutes into the fourth quarter, Morgan Bell (#11) scores on a well-executed man-up play. Lincoln pulls within two. At the 6:53 mark, Jose Sirdevan (#12) finds Trent Fewox (#21) for his fourth goal of the night. Fewox scores again at 6:27. Brendan Stamper (#3) scores at 3:01 to pull Lincoln within 2. Logan Short (#3) scores at 2:32 to give Chiles a three goal lead. Matt Congdon (#2) scores at 1:54. Jadon Pursell (#16) and Sean Congdon (#6) and two more goals to end the game 17-11 for a Chiles win. Chiles keeps it District 11 championship alive and will play Maclay at home on Monday night with the hopes of avenging their 9-5 loss on March 8.
