MCLA: FAU Owls Secure Playoff Spot in Georgia; But Fall to #11 FGCU in Regular Season Finale!

via FAU web site   For the first time in program history, The Florida Atlantic University Men’s Lacrosse Club clinched a berth in the annual SouthEastern Lacrosse Conference Championship Weekend tournament to be held in Johns Creek, Georgia on April 20th – 22nd. As a result of a 16-15 triple overtime victory against Georgia Southern University in Statesboro on Saturday, March 31st and a dominating 13-2 win versus Columbus State University in Columbus on Sunday, April 1st, FAU lacrosse has secured it’s first playoff appearance in the seven year history of the club. FAU claimed a spot in the playoffs by defeating the two Georgia-based regional rivals as well as SELC South Region opponents, College of Charleston and Coastal Carolina University at home the previous weekend. Florida Atlantic has reached the playoffs in just it’s fourth full season of play in the Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association(MCLA) and Southeastern Lacrosse Conference(SELC.)

The Owls story is an amazing one considering just two years ago the team went (2-10) in league play. Of the recent success, Head Coach Bryan Coco would go on to say: “Last year, the players really bought into the idea that it was year one… together, we built a foundation, and all of our returning players fought fiercely to protect it.” “Change is never comfortable, and as a team we had to face some growing pains…I’m extremely proud of everything they have accomplished.” This year, the Owls were bolstered with the addition of four NCAA transfers (Lynn University, Florida Southern University), and incoming freshman from lacrosse hotbeds including Tampa and Orlando, and even Virginia. (Steinbrenner, H.B. Plant, East River, FL) (Blue Ridge School, VA). But even on a five game win-streak, the Owls failed to overtake #11 FGCU on the road last weekend in Fort Myers, falling (17-4) to the Eagles. With the SELC tournament weeks away, it’s possible that the Owls will meet FGCU again… or, in-state rival #22 UNF, in Johns Creek. The Owls look to finish league play with a record of 9-3 with a win over the University of Miami this weekend.
