Sweeney’s Late Tally Keeps Panthers Streak Alive

Logan Sweeney‘s fourth goal of the game came with 10.2 seconds remaining and gave the Florida Tech Panthers a 15-14 win over Florida Southern in a Sunshine State Conference clash. The victory is the eighth in a row for the Panthers and they are now 6-0 in the SSC. The win streak and conference win total are now the best this program has ever seen.

Sweeney was the only Panther with more than two goals, but he had a lot of help as Mason Ostrowski, Lance Pavlina, Reid Chaconas and Carson Clough all had two goals each. Tyler Covey, Justin Williams, and Matt Weinstein rounded out the Panthers scoring.

This was a back-and-forth tilt throughout with the Panthers having to survive a couple mini-runs from the Moccasins. The last one included the home team scoring the first three goals of the fourth quarter. Florida Southern outscored the Panthers 4-2 in the final 15 minutes.

The first quarter saw the Panthers jump out to a 2-0 lead on goals from Chaconas and Sweeney against Mocs’ starting goalie Mike Greco. That was the end of the day for Greco, who was replaced by Matt Stocks with 12:41 to go in the opening stanza.

  Read the rest HERE   *****     via FSC press release   LAKELAND, FL – On the day Florida Southern College men’s lacrosse honored its eight seniors, the Moccasins were unable to answer a late goal from Florida Tech as they fell 15-14 at Moccasin Field. The Mocs (7-7, 2-4 SSC) quickly erased a 2-0 lead by the Panthers (9-4, 6-0) to take a 7-5 lead after one quarter, but FIT outscored the Florida Southern 6-1 in the second quarter to regain the momentum, and scored in the final 10 seconds of regulation to come away with the win. Senior Cam Delisle made his presence known in his first collegiate start as he recorded two goals and two assists in the defeat. Lucas Claude, Joe Appio, and Liam Winwood all recorded three goals, while three more Moccasins found the back of the net. HOW IT HAPPENED • Florida Southern watched the Panthers go up 2-0 in the first two minutes and 18 seconds. The Mocs would quickly shift the score into their favor as they went on a 3-0 run with goals from Winwood (11:42), Appio (10:09) and Claude (8:51). Florida Tech’s Lance Pavlina didn’t give the home side much time to celebrate its lead as he won the faceoff and immediately scored the third Panther goal at 8:48 in the first. In what seemed like déjà vu, Appio scored at 6:41 and 11 seconds later, Claude would give the Mocs a two-goal advantage. • Three minutes later FIT would cut the lead down to one. Seeing action for the first time since March 28, Delisle made the best of his time on the field as he recorded his first goal of the season on a pass from Claude. Less than a minute later the two would switch roles as Claude would this time put Florida Southern up three on a feed from Delisle. With 17 seconds left in the first quarter, the Panthers added their fifth goal of the afternoon to make it 7-5. • The second quarter began just as the first quarter did with a pair of Florida Tech goals, both unassisted from Carson Clough to tie the game at 7-7. This time the Mocs wouldn’t answer as FIT would score two more times. Florida Tech would take its first lead of the game at 9:18 and added another goal six minutes later. Colin Bayer would score Florida Southern’s only goal of the second quarter with 3:42 on the clock. The Panthers would score two more times in the half including a goal with six seconds remaining to bring the score to 11-8 at the half. • The Mocs would come out of the 10-minute break with two goals from Winwood to slice the deficit to one. His first goal came at 11:01 and his second came on a man-up opportunity on a feed from Bayer to cut the Panthers lead to just one. As he did in the first quarter, FIT’s Pavlina won the faceoff and promptly took it down the field to put the Panthers back up by a pair. As it did in the first two quarters, Florida Tech scored the final goal of the period as it scored with 3:59 remaining in the third quarter to take a 13-10 after three frames. • The Mocs would open the final frame on a 3-0 run thanks to goals from Delisle, Appio and Dyer. At 10:58 Dyer tied the game at 13, the first time the game was tied since FIT notched the match at 7-7 in the second quarter. Florida Tech would once again regain the lead with 6:40 on the clock. 45 seconds later, Alex Dagen found the back of the net as he tied the game at 14. In the final five minutes and 55 seconds, Florida Southern had a prime chance to take the lead on a shot from Justin Dunleavy with 3:39 remaining, only to see it saved by Panther goalkeeper Daniel Flock.  In a game that seemed like it was heading to extra time, Florida Tech had other intentions and put the game-winning goal in the back of the net with 10 seconds to go in the final quarter. INSIDE THE NUMBERS • Florida Southern leads the all-time series against Florida Tech 4-3. The Mocs were 3-0 in games at Bryant Stadium vs. the Panthers, as Saturday’s contest was played at the brand-new Moccasin Field. • The Moccasins outshot the Panthers, 43-37, while Florida Tech won 19-of-33 faceoffs. Each team picked up a total of 31 groundballs. • Both teams team converted a man-up opportunity. The Mocs had two chances while Florida Tech had three.
