Oak Hall 2019 A Kyle Cox Commits to Mercer University!

Congratulations to Kyle on his college choice and good luck in the future!   Name Kyle Cox High School Oak Hall School Graduation Year 2019 College Choice Mercer University Club Affiliations Sweetlax Florida, Florida Generals     Why did you choose this college? I chose Mercer University because of the opportunity to receive a great education while competing at the Division I level. Coach Kyle Hannan and Coach Chad Surman really made me feel at home and made me feel wanted as a part of their recruiting class. The proximity to home and campus is something I loved about the school as well. Also, I have a great relationship with the other commits and look forward to being a part of a program that is on the rise as well as competing for the SoCon championship. What are your first memories of the sport? In 3rd grade, one of my closest friends, Ryan O’Leary, told me about the sport of lacrosse as we were watching the varsity team practice after school. He got me interested in playing and later that day I asked my mom to drive me to the local sports store to buy a stick and I fell in love with the sport ever since. I played in a local Gainesville middle school league (G-Lax) as a 5th grader and remember throwing the ball out of bounds the first time I touched it which made me want to continue practicing and I just stuck with it. What part of the process was most surprising to you about the recruiting process and what would you like to pass on to those who are going to face it in the future? The part of the recruiting process that was most surprising to me was how competitive it is due to the limited amount of spots at the Division I level. Each school and coach does their process differently so some advice I would pass on to those who will go through the process in the future is to not compare your process with someone else. Some schools take longer than others in terms of evaluating players so don’t get discouraged if kids are committing to schools you think you are good enough of playing at. Keep emailing schools you are interested in and stay pro-active in the process. Continue to work hard and opportunities will present themselves. Who would you like to thank for helping you get here? I’d first like to thank my parents for the countless hours spent taking me to games/tournaments/practices, etc. They have sacrificed a great deal in order for this to happen and I couldn’t have done it without their support. I’d like to thank all of the Oak Hall lacrosse coaching staff, specifically coach Jonathan Montes for coaching me since I was in 5th grade and teaching me values on and off the field that I will take with me to college and beyond. I’d like to thank my brothers on the Oak Hall team for being the best group of guys to play with and for pushing me each day in practice and never letting me take a play off. Lastly, the class of 2018 really put Oak Hall on the map which allowed for me to be seen by coaches and I want to thank them for teaching me so much about the sport and the recruiting process.
