via Rollins press release   WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 16, 2018) – The Rollins men’s lacrosse team used a strong second quarter to take a 7-2 lead at the half, and held off a resurgent Westminster College squad, earning a 10-8 win on Friday afternoon a Cahall-Sandspur Field.  The win marks the second straight for the Tars, and advances their record to 2-3 on the season, while Westminster drops their second consecutive game and drop to 3-4 overall. Freshman Joey Cinque had a solid afternoon, scoring a hat trick to lead the team in goals scored.  Brandon Carlin and Greg Taicher netted two apiece, while Jeremy Slocumb, Grant Long, and Kyle Portera each netted one.  Slocumb led the team in overall points with five, notching a game high four assists, while Tommy Keane earned two assists of his own.  Carlin and Long also earned one assist apiece as the Tars earned a total of 10 goals and eight assists on the day.  Kyle Sudol had another impressive day at the faceoff-x, winning 14-of-21 attempts and picking up a game high 13 ground balls, which is good for a tie for fourth in program record books for most ground balls earned in a game.  Charlie Rask, Evan Schimek, and Keane earned a team best two caused turnovers apiece.  In goal, senior Andrew Hoemann played a full game, facing a total of 30 shots and 18 shots on goal from the Griffins.  Hoemann earned 10 saves, including four in the second quarter, while allowing just eight goals on the afternoon. The Griffins saw a team best three goals from Christian Pompoco, followed by two goals each from Nick Marcy and Troy Vance.  Thomas Sarjeant rounded out Westminster’s goal count with one of his own.  Marcy led the team in assists with two, earning a team best four points, while Lake Kadish dished out an assist of his own.  Both Marcy and Chase Flinders picked up a team best four ground balls, with Flinders winning 2-of-4 faceoff attempts.  Kyle Williams won 5-of-17 faceoff attempts, earning three ground balls along the way.  Both Troy Vance and Williams notched a team best three caused turnovers apiece.  In cage, Connor McFarlane played a full 60 minutes, earning 16 saves as he faced 41 shots and 26 shots on goal.  McFarlane allowed 10 goals, including five in the second quarter, en route to Westminster’s second-straight defeat. HOW IT HAPPENED:

• First Quarter:  Rollins opened up to a two goal lead thanks to goals by Cinque and Carlin, but the Griffins fought back to knot the score at 2-2 at the end of the first period thanks to goals by Sarjeant and Pompoco.
• Second Quarter:  Rollins used a strong second quarter to seal the deal, scoring five goals and holding Westminster scoreless throughout the entire quarter to give the Tars a 7-2 lead at halftime.
• Third Quarter:  Westminster scored first to open up the third stanza, and both teams traded blows twice to set the score at 9-4 in favor of Rollins entering into the final period.
• Fourth Quarter:  The Griffins slowly whittled away at the deficit, scoring four straight to pull to within one of the Tars, 9-8, with 2:11 to play.  Rollins took advantage of a late man-up opportunity, with Taicher finding the back of the net off of an assist by Slocumb, to close out the game with Rollins earning the 10-8 win.

  NOTES:

• Brandon Carlin earned a new career best in goals and overall points with two.
• Cinque’s hat trick marks a season high in both goals and overall points.
• Keane matched a career best two assists and earned a new career high in caused turnovers with two.
• Kyle Portera notched the first goal of his career as a Tar.
• Slocumb notched a new career high in overall points with five as he tallied one goal and a career high four assists.  His four assists place him in a tie for third in program record books for assists tallied in a game.
• Chase Snyder earned a season best three ground balls
• In all, Rollins out-shot their opponent 41-30, and saw more shots on frame, 26-18.
• The Tars bested their opponent off of the face, winning 14-of-21 on the afternoon thanks to K. Sudol.
• Rollins now leads the all-time series with the Griffins, 1-0.
• Freshman Kyle Sudol currently sits at the top of the program record books for Faceoff Win Percentage.  Sudol has won 57-of-95 attempts, and currently holds onto a win percentage of .600.
• With 71 overall points, Greg Taicher sits sixth in program record books for points in a career.  Taicher also sits seventh overall in career goals (51) and ninth in career assists (20).
• Jeremy Slocumb has moved into the program record books for career assists, having earned 11 to place him in a tied for 20^th.
• Connor Ashton currently sits 16^th in program record books for career points (42), 15^th for career goals (25), and 12^th for career assists (17).
• Lucas Brush has earned 121 ground balls, and sits sixth in program record books for ground balls in a career.  The Dublin, Ohio native is also currently fifth in program record books for career caused turnovers with 49.  He currently sits 28 CT’s behind program leader Nick Scannapieco (2010-13) who amassed 77 in his career.
