via Rollins press release   WHEELING, W.V. (February 18, 2018) – Taking to the field 15 days after their season opener back on February 3, the Rollins men’s lacrosse team found themselves unable to push past a stalwart Wheeling Jesuit squad, falling to the Cardinals by a final score of 10-6 on Sunday afternoon at Bishop Schmitt Field. The loss drops the Tars to a record of 0-2 on the season, while Wheeling Jesuit kicks off their 2018 season with a record of 1-0. Rollins saw a career best three goals from senior Jeremy Slocumb, followed by two goals from Greg Taicher and one from Brandon Carlin.  Connor Ashton led the way in assists with two, while Eric NeCamp and Evan Schimeck dished out one assist each.  Kyle Sudol won 13-of-20 faceoff attempts, picking up a team best seven ground balls, while Grant Long, Lucas Brush, and Taicher picked up three apiece.  Schimek led the team with three caused turnovers on the day, followed by Long, Taicher, and Brush with one each.  In goal, senior Andrew Hoemannplayed a full 60 minutes, facing 19 shots and earning nine saves while allowing 10 goals. Hoemann’s counterpart, Jake Lilly, proved to be one of the deciding factors in the game, facing a total of 23 shots from the Tars where he earned 17 saves, allowing only six to get by. The Cardinals saw a game best five goals and one assist from Dereck Downs, while Travis Getz scored two goals of his own.  David Corral, Michael Jablonski, and Jamison Smith all scored one goal apiece.  M Lee led the team in assists with two, followed by McLean Fitzmartin, Smith, and Downs with one each. S Gwyn picked up a team best four ground balls, while Max Butler, Jablonski, and Smith earned one caused turnover each to lead the squad.  At the faceoff-x, Fernando Martinez won 7-of-20. HOW IT HAPPENED:

• First Quarter:  Slocumb kicked off the scoring with a goal at the 13:24 mark, but three straight from the Cardinals saw the Tars fall into a 3-1 deficit with 3:08 to play in the first quarter.  As time ticked off the clock, Slocumb slipped on past Lilly with just three ticks left on the clock, setting the score at 3-2 after the first 15 minutes of action.
• Second Quarter:  Wheeling Jesuit got on the board first in the second period, scoring with 8:12 on the clock, but almost the entire quarter ran off the clock before a frenzy of scoring action kicked in.  Taicher finally halted the scoring drought with a goal off of an assist by Ashton with 2:50 to go in the period, but the Cardinals answered back with two goals within less than a minute of each other to close out the first half with a 6-3 lead.
• Third Quarter:  The third quarter was much like the second, with one goal by the Cardinals at the 9:07 mark, and a lot of scoreless activity before a final flurry of action with less than a minute on the clock.  Getz found the back of the net with 39 seconds left, followed by a late goal by Taicher with just eight ticks to go in the quarter, closing out the period with WJU holding onto an 8-4 lead.
• Fourth Quarter:  Slocumb once again kicked things off, scoring at the 9:22 mark to pull the Tars to within three, 8-5.  But a goal by Smith with 3:35 to go pulled the Cardinals back into a four goal advantage, 9-5.  Carlin netted an unassisted goal with 2:57 to play, but Wheeling Jesuit answered back with 1:33 left in the game to close out the contest with a final score of 10-6

  NOTES:

• Jeremy Slocumb notched a new career high for goals in a game with three
• Greg Taicher notched a new season best for goals in a game with two, and added an assist for a season best three points overall.
• Out of the 23 shots the Tars were able to fire off on frame, Jake Lilly was able to stop 17 of them, allowing only six goals
• Last time out against the Cardinals, the Tars rattled off five straight goals in the fourth quarter to defeat Wheeling Jesuit by a final score of 10-9 on March 2, 2017.  The win marked the first time the Tars have defeated WJU in program history.
• The Tars are now 1-3 overall against Wheeling Jesuit.  When playing in Wheeling, West Virginia, the Tars are 0-2.
• With 65 overall points, Greg Taicher currently sits 10^th in program record books for points in a career.  Taicher also sits 10^th overall in career goals (46) and career assists (19).
• Lucas Brush has earned 110 ground balls, good for seventh in program record books for ground balls in a career.  He needs 10 to surpass Andrew Matthews `17 in order to move into sixth place.  The Dublin, Ohio native is also currently fifth in program record books for career caused turnovers with 45.  He currently sits 32 CT’s behind program leader Nick Scannapieco (2010-13) who amassed 77 in his career.
