Rollins Women: Depth Shines as #11/14 Rollins Defeats Lincoln Memorial 16-3

WINTER PARK, Fla. (February 18, 2018) – The No. 11/14 ranked Rollins women’s lacrosse team opened their home schedule in dominating fashion, seeing almost every player take to the field en route to a 16-3 victory over Lincoln Memorial University on Sunday morning. The win at Cahall-Sandspur Field advances the Tars to a record of 1-1 on the season, while the Railsplitters drop to a 1-1 on their young campaign.
Nikki Stumpf led the team in goals with a hat trick, while the Tars saw a team best four points out of junior Kallie German, who netted two goals and two assists on the day. German was matched by Hannah Ashton, and Hannah Forbes with two goals apiece, while Forbes added an assist for three points, marking a season best. Hannah Coakley, Genia Sprinkle, Adia Field-Ridley, Maddie McVicker, and Kaitlin Young each scored one goal, while Marina Longo and Megan Cury notched a goal and an assist apiece. Eden Cooke, Julianna DeSimone, and Magggie Dougherty also earned one assist each on the day. DeSimone and Mikayla Purdy led the team with three ground balls each, while Maddie Hendren led the squad with three draw controls. Lindsay Van Beck earned a team high two caused turnovers.
In goal for the Tars, sophomore Sarah Neely earned the start, playing the entire first half where she earned two saves while allowing two goals. Malorie Olin saw 14:05 minutes between the pipes, earning three saves while allowing only one goal. Freshman Gabby Tanner made her collegiate debut, playing for 15:55 minutes in cage.
The Railsplitters saw one goal each from Casey Kelly, Amara Moss, and Kennedy Buechner. LMU was led in ground balls by Shannon Novak, who spent the first half in goal before moving to the field as a defender. In goal, Novak earned six saves while allowing nine goals in 30 minutes of action. Lincoln Memorial saw a team best three draw controls by Moss, while Zoe Zervos earned the team’s lone caused turnover on the day. Micayla Starnes closed out the game in goal for the Railsplitters, earning five saves while allowing seven goals.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- First Half: Rollins opened up the game with seven unanswered goals in the first 8:46 minutes of action to give the Tars a sizeable 7-0 lead with 21:14 to play in the first half. Buechner halted the run, putting Lincoln Memorial on the board at the 20:48 mark, but the Tars answered back with an unassisted goal by Cury to pull back into a seven point lead, 8-1, with 19:44 on the clock. Seven minutes came off the clock before the next goal was scored, with Moss finding the back of the net on an unassisted goal with 12:46 left in the half, setting the score at 8-2. McVicker closed out the period with a goal of her own off of a free position shot, setting the score at 9-2 at the break.
- Second Half: Lincoln Memorial opened up the second half with a free-position goal by Kelly with 24:13 on the clock, but the Tars answered back with two consecutive goals by Forbes to pull the Tars ahead, 11-3, with 22:58 to play. The Tars reached a 10 goal differential with 19:58 left in the game on a goal by Young, and sailed through the remainder of the game with three more goals to close out the game with a final score of 16-3.
- Sunday’s game marked the first time Rollins and Lincoln Memorial have met in official competition. Rollins now leads the overall series, 1-0.
- The Tars have won their last six home openers.
- Nikki Stumpf made her home debut as a Tar count, earning a season best three goals in her first official game on Cahall-Sandspur Field.
- The Tars played all but one player on their active roster, seeing a total of 35 different players take to the field.
- Six freshmen earned their first points of their collegiate career:
- Genia Sprinkle, Hannah Forbes, Kaitlin Young, Maddie McVicker, and Adia Field Ridley all scored their first collegiate goals
- Eden Cooke, earned her first point dishing out her first assist of her collegiate career
