Rollins Women: UPSET! #11 Tars Topple #6 Limestone Saints 9-7

GAFFNEY, S.C. (March 23, 2018) – The 11th-ranked Rollins women’s lacrosse team earned their second upset victory of the season, this time toppling sixth-ranked Limestone by a final score of 9-7 on Friday night at Saints Field.
The win marks the second time this season the Tars have taken down an opponent ranked higher than them, with their first upset win coming against then tenth-ranked Queens by a final score of 15-4 on Tuesday, March 6.
Rollins wins their eighth straight game, and advances to a record of 9-2 on the season, while the Saint lose just their second game of the season, and fall to 7-2 overall, snapping a five-game win streak.
Sophomore Hannah Ashton led the way, scoring a game best four goals, including the game-winner. Behind Ashton’s four, Kallie German netted a hat trick and added two assists for a game high five points. Nikki Stumpf also contributed two assists, while Hannah Coakley earned one. Maggie Doughertyand Paige Brock added to the goal count, with each scoring one apiece. Brenna Heaney and Kaitlin Prince led the Tars in ground balls with three each, with Dougherty earning a team best two caused turnovers. Off the draw, German, Ashton, and P. Brock won a team best two apiece. Malorie Olin played a full game in goal, facing a total of 26 shots and 17 shots on goal, earning 11 saves and allowing just seven goals.
Caitlyn Nemeth matched Ashton in goals, scoring four to lead the Saints on the evening. Courtney Lafler, Shannon Sisk, and Kendra Sheppard scored one goal each, while Britannie Ouimet dished out the team’s lone assist. Samantha Yurechuk and Alyssa Voccia led the team with three ground balls each, while Rose Blackburn earned a game high three caused turnovers. Off the draw, Voccia led the game with five, followed by Nemeth with four. Jenna Haring played a full game in goal, facing 16 shots and 15 shots on goal, allowing nine goals while earning just three saves, all in the first half.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- First Half: German put the Tars’ first two goals on the board, both off of assists by Stumpf, giving Rollins a 2-0 lead with 14:22 to go in the first half. Limestone scored with 13:58 on the clock, but the Tars saw Ashton score two straight within 30 seconds of each other go give Rollins a 4-1 lead with 12:25 before the half. Both teams scored two more each throughout the final minutes of the first half, closing out the period with Rollins holding onto a 6-3 lead.
- Second Half: The Tars netted two straight to open the second stanza, extending their lead to 8-3 with 20:57 to play. Limestone battled back and whittled away at the deficit, scoring four straight to pull to within one of the Tars, 8-7, with 2:21 to go. Rollins took advantage of a late locked-in penalty, which saw German connect a pass to Dougherty for a man-up goal with just 39 ticks left on the clock to close out the game with the Tars holding onto a 9-7 lead.
- The Tars and Saints have a long-standing rivalry dating back to April 24, 2009 where Rollins fell to Limestone by a score of 15-13. In the all-time series, Limestone now only leads by one, 6-5, but Rollins has won the last two matchups.
- The Tars entered into the week sitting 11th on the IWLCA Division II Coaches Poll, and sit 16th on the NIKE/US Lacrosse Division II Top 20.
- The Saints entered into Friday night’s South Region showdown ranked sixth on both the IWLCA Division II Coaches Poll, as well as the NIKE/US Lacrosse Division II Top 20.
- Career Records to Watch:
- Sophomore Maggie Dougherty has made her mark in career draw controls, moving into the Top-10 in program history as she as amassed 68 draw controls in her career. Dougherty sits 119 behind the program’s all-time leader, Erica Pagliarulo `13, with 187.
- German ranks first in the program record books for free-position goals scored, having earned 51 in her career, and also now leads the program in game-winning goals, with 13. The junior also ranks fourth for career goals scored with 128, and has jumped from seventh to third for career points scored with 186.
- Malorie Olin currently ranks second in program records for career saves with 428. She sits behind Elyse De Lisle `14, who amassed 463 in her career.
- Lindsay Van Beck has moved into third in program record books for caused turnovers in a career with 72. She sits 35 caused turnovers behind program leader Courtney Bianculli `13, who amassed 107 in her time with the Tars.
