Saint Leo: #19 Men’s Lacrosse Travels to Alabama-Huntsville Saturday to Open the Season

  via Saint Leo web site   SAINT LEO, Fla. – The No. 19 Saint Leo men’s lacrosse team travels to Alabama-Huntsville to start the 2018 season on Saturday, February 3 at 12 p.m. Opening day… The Lions’ 12 p.m. faceoff against the Chargers jump starts the Green and Gold’s 14-game schedule. Saint Leo will showcase the program’s home opener one week after beginning competition. The Lions welcomes Lincoln Memorial on Saturday, February 10 at 1:00 p.m. to University Turf Stadium. The home opener will feature game day promotion contest, “Show Your Pride” for students and fans. Lions fans are encouraged to display their school pride by wearing Green & Gold gear. The winner of the contest will receive a “Pride Pack” containing various Saint Leo merchandise. Links… Saint Leo at Alabama Huntsville – Live Stats USILA National Ranking Poll… The United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) named the Saint Leo Lions among the top 20 in the 2018 Men’s Lacrosse Division II Preseason Coaches Poll. The Lions will face five other nationally ranked programs, two out of the Sunshine State Conference; Tampa, NYIT, Mount Olive, Lindenwood, and Florida Tech. Sunshine State Conference… Saint Leo was named among a three-way tie for teams predicted to finish second in the SSC Coaches Preseason Poll. Tied with 33 total vote points, Saint Leo shares the number two slot with Florida Southern and Florida Tech. Saint Leo was the only second place team with a first place vote. 2018 Roster… The 2018 roster returns 15 experienced seniors. Of the 15, seven All-SSC members return to Head Coach Brad Jorgensen‘s veteran 2018 roster. First-team All-SSC selection Jake Bye finished his junior campaign with outstanding defensive efforts with 26 groundballs and 16 caused turnovers. 2017 Second Team All-SSC returners include Jake GilmourKyle PauwelsAnthony Visintin and Thomas Tatarian. Among the conference standouts is Kyle Pauwels, the 2017 NCAA Division II shots on goal percentage leader (.873), who led the Lions in becoming the NCAA Division II team statistical leader in shots on goal percentage (.378) – Saint Leo’s second straight season earning a NCAA Division II statistical title. In addition to the Lions’ first and second team all-conference honors, two freshmen were named on the prestigious SSC All-Rookie team: Devin Sparks and Matt Shand. New Faces… Jorgensen welcomes nine freshman and two mid-year transfers. Among the 11 newest members are 2016 early signees Benjamin HynekJustin Taylor and Will Toman. Hynek comes from Chicago, Ill., adding depth to the Lions attack. Taylor, a midfielder, joins Saint Leo from Las Vegas, Nev. and Toman, a defender and long-stick middle from Plainfield, Ill., brings depth to the defensive end.
