via Stetson press release   Shelby Lehmann scored four goals and Maddie Holveyadded three more but Stetson couldn’t overcome a slow start as the Hatters dropped their ASUN Conference opener to Coastal Carolina, 17-13, on Thursday in Conway, S.C. The Hatters (2-9 overall, 0-1 ASUN) saw the Chanticleers (5-6, 2-0) jump out to a 5-0 lead less than eight minutes into the game. Stetson scored three of the next four goals to get back in it. Karli Maguire, Holvey and Rachel Valocchi all found the back of the net to make it a 6-3 affair with 17:48 left before halftime. Coastal, however, responded by scoring four of the game’s next five goals for a 10-4 lead with 3:01 to play before the break. But Stetson closed the half with three straight goals – all by Lehmann – as the Hatters cut the deficit to 10-7 at halftime. Stetson’s rally continued into the second half as the Hatters eventually pulled even with the Chanticleers. After Coastal took a 12-8 lead, the Hatters got another goal by Lemann and one each from Hallie Merz, Holvey and Taylor Patrizi to knot things up at 12-12. But Coastal not only started strong, they finished strong as well. The Chanticleers scored five goals in the final 15 minutes, all while limiting the Hatters to just a single score, to pull out the win. In addition to her three goals, Holvey won eight draws and had three ground balls. Merz had four assists and Riley Reagan added two. Liza Diamond played all 60 minutes in goal, making 12 saves. The Hatters continue ASUN play when they visit Old Dominion on Sunday.
