Panthers Beat Tampa in SSC Showdown

The fifth-ranked Florida Tech Panthers went on the road to Tampa Wednesday and came away with a 22-13 win over the 16th-ranked Spartans.

Sara Grenier and Mollie Kaplan tallied five times for the Panthers, while Leah Dunn (4), Sam Schiano (3), Mary Gormley, (2) Lauren Tybor (2), and Alexis Townsend all contributed to the scoring barrage.

The Panthers took 40 shots, with 35 on goal, against Spartans goalie Bridget Sutter. Panthers starter Stephanie Stuart and backup Chloe Zador combined to make three saves. The Spartans put 16 of their 20 shots on goal.

With 27:54 to go in the game, the Panthers held a slim 11-10 lead before they went on an 8-1 run, putting the game out of reach and pushing Florida Tech to their 11th win of the season.

The game started pretty even, before Grenier started a three-goal run with 18:56 left in the first half. Dunn and Gormley scored 12 seconds apart, to make it 5-3 Panthers. The three goals had just a 36-second gap between them.

The No. 5 Panthers Defeat the No. 16 Spartans 22-13

TAMPA, Fla. – The No. 16 University of Tampa women’s lacrosse team was defeated by the No. 5 Florida Tech Panthers by a final score of 22-13.   • The Spartans started the game off with a goal from Maggie Gladden and an assist from Graeme Eber.
  • The Panthers answer right back with a goal 10 seconds later.
  • Rachel Crawford scored with an assist from Claire Swanson.
  • Florida Tech responded with another goal.
  • With less than 20 left in the half Carly Vaccaro scored off an assist from Crawford.
  • The Panthers scored three unanswered goals. 5-3 Panthers.
  • Crawford scored her second goal of the game with 17:11 remaining.
  • Florida Tech answers back with three goals.
  • Vaccaro recorded her second goal of the game with an assist from Gladden.
  • The Panthers scored again, making their led 9-5 before the half.
  • Tampa answered with a goal. Vaccaro‘s third goal of the game and Crawford‘s second assist.
  • With 6:08 remaining in the half Florida Tech scored another goal.
  • Swanson scored her first goal of the game from a free position shot.
  • The Spartans scored again. Allie Popelar scored off an assist from Crawford.
  • Florida Tech scored their 11th goal of the game with 5:07 left in the half.
  • Tampa was losing at the half 11-8.
  2nd Half
  • Similar to the first half, Tampa was the first to score with a goal from Caroline Forester.
  • Crawford scored her third goal of the game. The Spartans closed the gap, making it 11-10
  • The Panthers answered back with two goals.
  • Forester assisted Crawford with 23:17 remaining.
  • Florida Tech responded with six more goals.
  • Tampa finally answered back with a free position shot goal by Forester.
  • The Panthers scored two more unanswered goals.
  • Vaccaro scored her fourth goal of the game with an assist from Crawford.
  • Florida Tech scored the last goal of the game with less than a minute left.
  • Tampa lost the game by a final score of 22-13.
  INSIDE THE STATS:
  • Crawford and Vaccaro led the Spartans in goals with four.
  • Crawford also led the Spartans in assists with four.
  • Defensively, Abby CoccagnaAlexa Scudillo and Claire Swanson led the Spartans, each with three caused turnovers.
  • Swanson also led Tampa in draw control wins with five.
  • Bridget Sutter played the entire 60 minutes in the cage for Tampa, logging 13 saves.
