Rollins Men: Tars Edged Out by #6 Saint Leo, 11-10, in Down to the Wire Decision

Rollins Unable to Best Nationally-Ranked Lions in Sunshine State Conference Action 

SAINT LEO, Fla. (April 4, 2018) – Tied at 10-10 with under a minute to play, the Rollins men’s lacrosse team was unable to hold back a No. 6 Saint Leo University squad, allowing the Lions to score the game-winning goal with just eight seconds left on the clock to pull out the 11-10 win over the Tars. The hard-fought Sunshine State Conference loss drops the Tars to a mark of 4-5 overall and 1-2 in SSC play, while the Lions advance to 9-1 and remain undefeated in conference action with a mark of 3-0. Jackson Colling led the team in overall points on the night, earning a team best four assists and adding one goal for five points.  Connor Ashton followed close behind with four as he notched a hat trick and added one assist, while Joey Cinquescored three goals of his own.  Greg TaicherTommy Keane, and Kyle Sudol scored one goal apiece, while Jeremy Slocumbdished out one assist on the night.  Kyle Sudol led the game in ground balls with six as he won 15-of-23 faceoff attempts for the Tars.  Both Chase Snyder and Taicher earned a game high two caused turnovers each.  In goal, senior Andrew Hoemannearned six saves, posting up three in the third quarter, as he faced 31 shots and 17 shots on goal from the nationally-ranked Lions. The Lions were led by Jake Gilmour, who scored two goals and added a team best three assists for five points.  Kyle Pauwels netted two goals and added one assist, while Charlie Kurtenbach tallied two goals of his own.  Julian Taylor, Matt Shand, Anthony Visintin, Ethan Ticehurst, and Zach Lysyk scored one goal apiece, while Shand, Taylor, and Jordan Williams dished out one assist each.  Taylor and Ticehurst led Saint Leo in ground balls with four each, while Ticehurst, Jake Bye, Conner Knaresboro, and Daniel Sparks earned one caused turnover apiece.  At the faceoff-x, Jordan Williams won 7-of-18 attempts, while Justin Taylor won two-of-three on the night.  In goal, Thomas Tatarian earned 23 saves, including eight in the second quarter, to keep the Tars at bay. HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • First Quarter:  The Lions jumped out to a two goal lead with 9:13 on the clock in the first quarter, but a goal by Jackson Colling with 4:34 on the clock ignited a four goal run by the Tars to put them in a 4-2 lead with 23 second left in the quarter.  A Late goal by the Lions pulled SLU to within one of the Tars to close out the first 15 minutes of action with Rollins holding onto a 4-3 lead.
  • Second Quarter:  Saint Leo opened up the second quarter with three straight goals, taking a 6-4 lead with 11:28 to go before the break.  The Tars saw Colling connect a feed to Ashton for their lone goal of the quarter, scoring with 6:13 left before halftime to pull Rollins to within one, 6-5, at the break.
  • Third Quarter:  Saint Leo opened up yet another quarter with the first goal of the period, and netted two straight to hold onto an 8-5 lead with 12:27 on the clock in the third stanza.  Colling once again connected a feed to Ashton to break the Lions’ run, pulling the Tars back to within two of Saint Leo with 9:18 on the clock, 8-6.  Saint Leo answered back with an unassisted goal by Gilmour with 7:46 left in the quarter, but two straight goals by Cinque pulled the Tars to within one, 9-8, with 4:29 to go in the period.  The Lions earned one more goal in the third quarter, scoring off of a feed by Pauwels to Visintin to set the score at 10-8 entering into the final quarter.
  • Fourth Quarter:  Rollins opened up the fourth quarter with two consecutive goals, pulling even with the Lions with 10:36 on the clock with a score of 10-10.  Despite both teams’ best efforts, the fourth quarter remained scoreless until the Lions were able to seal the deal with a late goal with just eight seconds left on the clock to earn the 11-10 victory.
  NOTES:
  • The Tars’ longest running rivalry dates back to their first matchup on March 2, 2008, and has seen the two teams square up against each other 15 times throughout the years.  Saint Leo holds onto the series advantage, 12-3.
  • After dropping a hard-fought contest to then-No. 18 Florida Tech last week, the Tars did not receive any votes on this week’s USILA Division II Coaches Poll, and received votes on the NIKE/US Lacrosse Division II Top 20.
  • Saint Leo enters into Wednesday night’s game riding a four-game win streak, and currently sits at No. 6 on both the USILA Poll, and the NIKE/USL Top 20.
  • Connor Ashton matched a career best in overall points with four, as well as with goals in a game with three.
  • Jackson Colling set a new season high for points in a game with five, and currently sits in a tie for third in program record books for assists in a single game with four, marking a new personal best in his time as a Tar.
  • Chase Snyder earned a new season high for ground balls with four.
  • Kyle Sudol scored the first goal of his collegiate career.
  • Greg Taicher matched a career best for caused turnovers in a game with two.
  • Senior Andrew Hoemann currently sits sixth in program record books for career saves with 82.
  • Freshman Kyle Sudol currently sits third in program record books for Faceoff Win Percentage.  Sudol has won 96-of-165 attempts, and currently holds onto a win percentage of .582.
  • With 85 overall points, Greg Taicher currently sits fifth in program record books for career points. Taicher also sits fifth overall in career goals (59) and sixth in career assists (26).
  • Jeremy Slocumb now sits in the program record books for career assists, having earned 14 to place him in 17th.
  • Connor Ashton currently sits 13th in program record books for career points (52), 15th for career goals (29), and has moved into a tie for eighth for career assists (23).
  • Lucas Brush has earned 139 ground balls, and sits fourth in program record books for ground balls in a career.  The Dublin, Ohio native is also currently fifth in program record books for career caused turnovers with 53.  He currently sits 24 CT’s behind program leader Scannapieco, who amassed 77 in his career.
