Down 8-5 at halftime and 9-5 early in the second half, the Hatters (2-10, overall, 0-2 ASUN) rallied over the final 22 minutes, at one point scoring four straight goals to tie the game. But back-to-back scores by the Monarchs (4-8, 2-1) down the stretch and a key save in the final minute preserved the victory for ODU. Old Dominion opened the game by scoring three of the first four goals for a 3-1 lead less than six minutes into the game. Stetson surged to a 4-3 lead with three straight goals by Riley ReaganKarli Maguire and Patrizi. But the lead didn’t last long as the Monarchs responded with four straight goals for a 7-4 advantage. ODU led by three goals at halftime and eventually owned a 10-6 advantage in the second half before the Hatters heated up again. Sandra Stephan and Maddie Holvey both scored and Patrizi followed with two more goals, tying the game at 10-10 with 8:53 to play. Back-to-back goals by the Monarchs made it 12-10, and Patrizi scored her fourth and final goal with 2:41 to play to make it a 12-11 game. After Patrizi’s goal, the Hatters and Monarchs exchanged empty possessions before the Hatters had a chance with under a minute to play. But Stephan’s shot with 30 seconds left was saved, and Maguire’s follow seven seconds later was wide and ODU held on for the win. Maguire (3) and Holvey (2) joined Patrizi with multi-goal games. Reagan and Hallie Merz each had three assists, and Liza Diamond had nine saves in goal. The Hatters return to action when they open a four-game home stand, beginning with Delaware State, 5 p.m., Friday, at the Athletic Training Center.
