JU Women: Late Game Heroics Lift Dolphins Over Coastal Carolina 13-11

via JU press release   JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Back-to-back goals in the final 2:22 from juniors Erin McGuire and Lillie Miller propelled Jacksonville University women’s lacrosse to its fourth-straight win, and second in ASUN Conference action, with a 13-11 victory at Coastal Carolina, Sunday afternoon. The Dolphins imrpove to 9-3 on the year and 2-0 in the ASUN, and move into sole possession of first place in the league standings. “This was a classic game between two teams that know each other well. Coastal prepared well for us over the last couple of week and they had an excellent game plan. I was proud of how our defense recovered and how our fast breaks helped us get back into the game. We did not have a single dedicated practice for Coastal, so it’s especially nice to see our players sort out the game on the fly,” stated head coach Mindy McCord. McGuire broke open an 11-11 tie at the 2:22 mark after she came around from behind the net and converted an underhanded, low-to-high shot past the left shoulder of Chanticleer goalie Harley Barrett.

Though the ensuing draw was won by the hosts, senior Ashtyn Hiron caused Coastal Carolina to turn the ball over and set up the possession that netted the Dolphins’ insurance tally with 1:00 left on the clock. Starting from 20 yards out, Miller rolled off her defender, rushed toward goal, and finished high-to-low to put the Dolphins up by two, 13-11, to close out the game.

Controlling the first 15 minutes of the game, Coastal Carolina (5-7, 2-1 ASUN) notched four straight goals before freshman Sarah Elms found an answer at 23:49. The hosts added two more goals to make it 6-1 with 17:25 to go before halftime. Added McCord, “They [Coastal Carolina] came out with a lot of emotion and executed very well early on. They are a much better, more confident team than faced Towson earlier this season. They were much more competitive overall and they pushed us to our limit, which was fun. We’ve worked hard at finishing games out after we let Dartmouth slip away. Today we didn’t start well, but we finished pretty well.” Jacksonville quickly refocused, with back-to-back tallies from Elms just 34 seconds apart to cut CCU’s lead in half and spark a 5-0 Dolphin run that would tie the game up at 6-6 with 12:35 showing on the clock. The Dolphins and Chanticleers traded the final four goals of the half to remain deadlocked at 8 apiece at the break. Coming out of halftime, Elms and Hiron finished shots just 12 seconds apart at 24:48 and 24:36, respectively. That was all the Dolphins’ needed to keep momentum, and despite two more ties in the score, Jacksonville never relinquished the lead. “Megan Prescott was a big difference-maker on the draw and getting defensive ground balls, controlling Sophie Cotter in the second half. She didn’t score, but she was disruptive in many areas,” McCord added. Emily Poelma was great in goal; she caused turnovers and got ground balls. She made saves when they were needed most. Rebounding from last game vs. ODU, we are glad to have had just 11 turnovers. Overall, we have done a good job of keeping possession this season.” Elms led the Dolphins with five goals for her seventh-straight game with three or more points, while McGuire and Hiron both finished the day with a hat trick and Miller added a goal. Hiron (5 DC) and Prescott (4 DC) combined for nine of the Dolphins’ 11 draw controls, as Hiron added two ground balls and two caused turnovers and Prescott totaled four ground balls. To go along with her seven saves, Poelma picked up two ground balls and caused a turnover between the pipes to earn the win and improve to 5-2 on the year. Coastal Carolina was led by Haley Kyger’s five points (3 goals, 2 assists), while Crowther added a game-high six draw controls. Poelma’s counterpart, Barrett, finished the day with 13 saves in the loss. The Dolphins return to D.B. Milne Field for the final five games of the regular season, beginning this coming weekend when Howard (April 13) and Delaware State (April 15) venture to Duval. Jacksonville squares off with the Bison this Friday at 4 pm, and take on the Hornets at two days later at noon.
