UT Women: The #19 NYIT Bears Upset the #15 Spartans 8-7

TAMPA, Fla. – The No. 15 University of Tampa women’s lacrosse team falls to the No. 19 NYIT Bears by a final score of 8-7.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
1st Half
- The Bears were the first team to score with 21:43 left in the half.
- Allie Popelar then put the Spartans on the board off a free possession goal with 16:04 remaining in the half.
- Claire Swanson netted her first goal of the game with 11:16 on the clock.
- The Bears countered 3 minutes later with a goal to tie the game at two.
- With 2:54 remaining, NYIT scored giving the Bears the lead.
- Going into halftime, the Bears led the Spartans 3-2.
- Off a free possession shot, Shannon Sweeney scored the first goal of the second half, tying the game.
- The Bears answered with a goal with 25:50 left to play.
- With 20:04 left in the game, NYIT scored again off a free possession shot making the score 5-3, the Bears on top.
- Down two players, Tampa was able to hold off the Bears from scoring.
- Natalie Carraway then scored her first goal of the game with 11:46 remaining.
- Less than a minutes later, Maggie Gladden scored her first goal of the game to tie it back at 5.
- However, 9 seconds later the Bears responded with a goal to take the lead once again.
- With 7:15 left, NYIT cushioned their lead with another goal, making the score 7-5.
- Kayla Kosubinsky then scored for the Spartans off a free possession shot, 6:21 left on the clock.
- The Bears then notched their final goal with 3:47 left in the game.
- Caroline Forester scored the last goal for the Spartans, the assist from Carraway with 2:27 left to play.
- The No. 19 Bears upset the No. 15 Spartans by a final score of 8-7.
- On offense, all of the Spartan’s goals were scored by different players.
- Natalie Carraway had the only assist for Tampa.
- Defensively, the Spartans were led by Abby Coccagna who recorded one caused turnover and picked up five ground balls. Emily Stevenson followed with two caused turnovers and one ground ball.
- Amanda Rom led UT in draw control wins with six.
- Bridget Sutter recorded 15 saves for the Spartans.
- 7 different Spartans had goals for Tampa.
- Freshman Bridget Sutter tallied a career high of 15 saves in one game.
