American Heritage-Delray tops Vero Beach to Advance to Girls Lacrosse State Championship

  Excerpt: When a youthful American Heritage-Delray faced state juggernaut Vero Beach in the girls lacrosse state semifinals two years ago, the Stallions weren’t quite on the Fighting Indians’ level yet, but it was clear the gap was closing. On Thursday night, Heritage-Delray officially surpassed Vero Beach atop the lacrosse landscape, symbolizing a changing of the guard of the state’s elite. In the state semifinals, the Stallions scored 24 seconds into the contest and never trailed, topping the 10-time state champs 11-5 to advance to the title game. Ranked fifth in the nation by Lacrosse Magazine, American Heritage-Delray will face Lake Highland Prep on Friday night at 9 p.m. for the championship. “To hold Vero Beach to five goals says something special about our defense,” American Heritage-Delray coach John McClain said. “Just our whole entire unit. Vero Beach has been an amazing program for 12-14 years — unbelievable coach, amazing athletes. I think his whole entire team is committed to D1 programs.
