FIT: Women’s Lacrosse Keeps Winning Streak Alive

Melbourne, Fla. – On a night in which the team wore special ribbons and hairstyles along with handmade tie-dyed t-shirts for it’s Game Hair Havoc game in support of the Headstrong Foundations cancer awareness campaign, Kayla Minton’s seven points helped lead the Florida Tech women’s lacrosse team passed Quincy University Wednesday night by a score of 17-6.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

FIRST QUARTER:

  • Florida Tech started off the game by scoring nine unanswered goals against Quincy.
  • Karly Liebendorfer recorded Tech’s first goal with an assist from Rachel Johnson.
  • Kayla Minton recorded two back-to-back goals, the second assisted by Carly Niro.
  • Gillian Craigs only goal of the game then came with an assist from Sophia Scichilone.
  • Johnson scored again with 3:07 remaining to put Tech up 5-0.
  • Niro’s first goal of the game then came assisted from Scichilone with 2:28 to go.
  • Kayla Minton picked up the hat trick at the end of the first with 20 seconds remaining off an assist from Craig as Tech led 7-0 at the end of the first.

SECOND QUARTER:

  • Jennifer Boyle led off the second with a goal assisted by Minton 1:16 into the quarter.
  • Niro’s second goal of the game followed shortly after.
  • Down 9-0, Quincy scored its first goal of the game with 8:41 remaining in the second.
  • A goal from Caroline Finn assisted by Minton, followed by a woman up goal from Minton.
  • The Panthers led 11-1 heading into halftime.

THIRD QUARTER:

  • The Hawks started the third by scoring two unanswered goals to bring the game back to within nine goals.
  • Johnson’s second goal of the night put Tech back up by 10 coming off an assist from Gabrielle Skowronski.
  • Finn’s goal assisted from Emma Angelo put tech up 13-3, before Charlotte Hardie got in on the points party for the Panthers scoring her first goal of the game.
  • Millie Hurt scored the final goal of the third off an assist from Finn giving Tech the 15-3 lead entering the final quarter of play.

FOURTH QUARTER:

  • Angelo’s first goal of the game came a woman up to start the fourth off a Skowronski assist.
  • Quincy recorded three unanswered goals making it a 16-6 game.
  • Minton’s fifth goal of the night came with 19 seconds to go in the final quarter giving Florida Tech the win with a final score of 17-6.

NOTABLE PANTHERS:

  • Minton tied her career best seven points and five goals tonight.
  • Johnson, Niro and Finn all had three points from two goals and one assist.
  • Emily Harris recorded her fifth win this season in net making six saves in thirty minutes of play allowing just one goal.
  • Minton, Scichilone and Skowronski all led the team with two assists each.
  • A total of 10 different panthers scored with 12 recording a point in the game.
  • Scichilone’s six ground balls were a career high.
  • Elizabeth Christ caused a team high two caused turnovers.
  • Christ and Hardie led the No. 1 draw control crew in the country as each won five draw controls.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:

  • Florida Tech out shot Quincy 39-16.
  • 33 of Tech’s shots were on goal with Quincy having 13 shots on goal.
  • Quincy’s keeper recorded 16 saves with the Panthers three goalies combining for seven total saves.
  • Quincy recorded 11 turnovers with Tech turning the ball over 10 times.
  • The Hawks were 12-18 on clear attempts as the Panthers went 10-11.
  • Quincy recorded 24 ground balls to Tech’s 25 ground balls.
  • Tech out drew Quincy on draw controls 20-6.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE

  • This was the first meeting between Florida Tech and Quincy University
  • Heading into the game the Panthers led the Nations in draw control percentage (.659%) and draw controls per game (18.38).
  • They had the second highest free position percentage capitalizing on 22 of 32 free position shot attempts.
  • They were eighth in the country in both clearing percentage (.898%) and shooting percentage (.543%)

UP NEXT: The Panthers will continue their six-game home stand with their fifth game in a row at Rick Stottler Field on Saturday, March 18th at 11:00 AM when they’ll host the Alabama-Huntsville University Chargers. 15 minutes prior to the game, Florida Tech will honor its five graduating Scholar Athlete’s for a special Senior Day ceremony.
