FLN Boys 2A Top 15 Poll – Week Ending 3/26/23

1) Lake Mary (12-0)

2) Ponte Vedra (10-4)

3) St. Thomas (9-2)

4) Winter Park (11-2)

5t) Jupiter (9-4)

5t) Plant (7-5)

7) Nease (9-3)

8) Steinbrenner (10-1)

9) Mitchell (10-3)

10) Western (7-1)

11) Viera (10-4)

12) Newsome (8-3)

13) Bartram Trail (7-4)

14) Niceville (10-1)

15t) Gulf Coast (12-2) / Vero Beach (6-6)

Also Considered: Windermere (9-4), Lake Brantley (7-5), Creekside (9-4), Lake Howell (10-2), Leon (10-1)

Lake Mary continues to roll, with a 3-0 week that included wins over 1A ranked SJP and LHP, and an easy win over Winter Springs. Two easy games this week to complete an undefeated regular season.

Ponte Vedra took a nice road/neutral win over Tampa Jesuit, and they only have left a tough out-of-state opponent this week. All eyes point to the Region 1 final at this point.

St. Thomas fell to St. Edward’s but took the big win over Jupiter in the race to have the home game in the Region 4 final. Interesting fact: this is only the second time I can find where a team (St. Edward’s) beat both St. Thomas and St. Andrew’s in the same regular season (Oxbridge 2019). STA and SA finish the regular season with their annual donnybrook/slobberknocker/knock-down-drag-out/whatever you feel like calling it . . .

Winter Park split on the week, with an easy win over Lake Howell followed by yesterday’s one goal loss at Bolles. They should win out and have a clear path to Naples.

Jupiter split on the week, easily handling South Fork before bowing by two at home to St Thomas, and they still have their home and home final with Benjamin on Wednesday.

Plant went 3-0 on the week, including a big performance against a tough Mitchell, and finish with an easy game this week.

Nease had an impressive week with road wins over Bartram and Holy Trinity and they should end up with the #3 seed in Region 1, which is where I had them all season. They do have to avoid an upset versus a tough St Augustine team this week.

Steinbrenner continues to roll, with a 3-game week that included a big win over Newsome and has only Sickles left.

Mitchell split the week and has one more shot at a signature win with Jesuit this week.

Western won a close road game at Gulliver, but was handled by AH-Plantation at home, which was a huge win for AH-P. They finish with Wellington this week.

Viera was tripped up by Jensen Beach by a goal and won two games, and finish with Merritt Island. It looks like the #2 seed relies on winning the Vero district final and a little help from Lake Howell.

Newsome has struggled down the stretch and Steinbrenner gave them a bad loss. One game left and then a district shot at Plant to make a case for a higher seeding.

Bartram Trail fell to both Nease and Creekside and could miss the bracket entirely with a Menendez loss and a first round district loss.

Niceville lost to an out-of-state team and face Leon tomorrow for a huge preview of the possibility of winner-take-all in the District 1 final, where the loser could fall out of an at-large bid.

Gulf Coast lost both games this week to Cardinal Mooney and Bishop Verot, and have to face Canterbury, who needs to keep winning to ensure at least an at-large bid.

Vero Beach took a win over Martin County, and finishes with Wellington. Their region is not strong this year, so now it’s about seeding versus Viera and Lake Howell to avoid Winter Park in the semifinals.

In the Considered List, Windermere won twice, including West Orange, Lake Brantley won twice and has three games, including Montverde this week. Creekside had the big win over Bartram in a 2-0 week, Leon was upset by Forest in a 1-1 week, and Lake Howell lost both games this week, including to Oviedo.

No one made a move last week that gets into the Considered list.
